SN: Observational Support

• 1054 AD: Crab SN seen by Chinese, Native American, African observers

  • Bright as full moon for several weeks, slowly faded

• Tycho saw one in 1572, Kepler in 1604

• We observe some in other galaxies!

  • Can rival entire galaxy in brightness for a few weeks

• SN 1993J in M31 – 11 million ly away

  • Not there one night, there the next (OH S.12)
