Ongoing Projects

• Teaching Astronomy 10 at Vista Community College.

• Project Scientist, SPEAR (Spectrography of Plasma Evolution from Astrophysical Radiation)/FIMS (FUV Imaging Spectrograph), an instrument for mapping diffuse far-ultraviolet (912-1800 Å) emission from the interstellar medium. SPEAR/FIMS is a collaboration between UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory, the Satellite Technology Research Center at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology and the Korea Astronomy Observatory. SPEAR/FIMS is the primary science instrument aboard KAISTSAT-4. SPEAR is funded through the NASA Space Astrophysics Research and Analysis (SARA) program.
  • 2003/09/26: Launch scrubbed due to problems fueling the launch vehicle. Will make another attempt tomorrow.

• Project Scientist, EUVIP (Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Photometer), an EUV imaging telescope for imaging of atmospheric and astronomical phenomena. Successully launched aboard the ARGOS mission, Feb 23, 1999. (1996-) Woo hoo!

• Project Scientist, SETI@home. Now you can participate in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence from the comfort of your home. The SETI@home project takes data from the SERENDIP project and distributes it via the internet to millions of computers around the world for analysis.

• EURD (Espectrógrapho Ultravioleta Extremo para la Radiación Difusa) Science Team (1992--). The EURD instrument, launched in April 1997 aboard the Spanish satellite MINISAT-01, investigates diffuse emission from the interstellar medium at wavelengths between 400 and 1100 Å.

• EUVE NO-ID identification, EUVE and optical observations of unidentified EUV sources in an attempt to determine the nature of these sources. (1994-1999)

• Project Scientist, DUVE (Diffuse Ultraviolet Experiment), an Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) spectrometer for study of the diffuse FUV background. Successfully launched, July 1992 (1991-1993)

EUVE related stuff

• Charaterization and correction of the effects of varation in the sensitivity of EUVE over the field of view.
