TESTING Stellar Evolution Models

• Evolution Models PREDICT:

  • Least massive stars take longest to form
  • Most massive stars leave MS first
  • Stars become red giants or supergiants after they leave the MS
  • Some low and medium-mass stars become WDs

• How to test?

  • Watch sun for 10 billion yrs? IMPRACTICAL!
  • Look at sets of stars that are ALL THE SAME AGE!
