• BUT matter is raining down from above

• Eventually, core can’t hold itself up any more, and COLLAPSES (forcing protons + electrons together p++e-®n+ν, Energy is carried away by the neutrinos)

• Collapsing core becomes a NEUTRON STAR (held up by neutron degeneracy pressure) or a BLACK HOLE (held up by nothing)

• Envelope blasted apart in a SUPERNOVA
