Thanks Wiggo for the privileged of taking out another TLPTPHW.

Been under the weather for the last several days. So my sticky might have the number of times I coughed up phlem something to do with my illness.

Now for the unusual rules:
-------------

1. The winner of the last thread starts the new one with a post of these rules.
2. Chooses a future event which triggers the winner, e.g. post number, date-time, and records it privately somehow (yellow sticky, etc.)
3. Everyone has fun posting until the target event is reached.
4. When the target is reached, the old winner posts a declaration of the new winner and also PMs them.
5. Shortly after this a Mod will lock the recently won thread. (My preference is for the winner to ask the mods to lock the old thread after the new one is started.)
6. No double posts. Violators buy drinks or a meal for the house in Rocky's.
7. Additional rule retained from the last round - No posts that APPEAR to be blank - these will be ignored or deleted. (Sig lines do not count as part of a post)
8. No picture-only posts - not all pictures we link to show on everyone's computers & phones.
8a. Keep the number of pictures per post under 3 or less and/or make them tiny and links to full size.

At least you wern't having mud or ice bath then.

We got to a muggy 24C here on this Thorsday, but the temp is dropping quickly as 1 of Thor's traveling shows signals that it's quickly closing in.

Cheers.

Visiting Calculator Soup (what a great name that is) gives CCCXXXIX
With all those "x" and "c" plus only one "i" that's one number that makes me so grateful for us using Arabic digits....

Ahhhh...

(From another thread...)

So THAT's why the USA have their inconsistent back-to-front jumbled up way of writing dates!!!

The USA literally have their jumbled up date scheme written in stone!

Well I never!

Fancy that!!

'n all that 'n' that.

Myself in my worlds of computers, I much prefer the nicely consistent most-significant-first scheme as used in the rest of our numbering system. Eg, for today we have:

2025/02/20 15:50 GMT

Enjoy!

Reminds me of this historic note to stop a holy war in the ARPANET:

Danny Cohen: On Holy Wars and a plea for peace, 1 April 1980. Internet Experiment Note 137: https://www.rfc-editor.org/ien/ien137.txt

This is an attempt to stop a war. I hope it is not too late and that
somehow, magically perhaps, peace will prevail again.

The latecomers into the arena believe that the issue is: "What is the
proper byte order in messages?".

The root of the conflict lies much deeper than that. It is the question
of which bit should travel first, the bit from the little end of the
word, or the bit from the big end of the word? The followers of the
former approach are called the Little-Endians, and the followers of the
latter are called the Big-Endians. The details of the holy war between
the Little-Endians and the Big-Endians are documented in [6] and
described, in brief, in the Appendix. I recommend that you read it at
this point. [...]
[6] Jonathan Swift: Gulliver's Travels, 1726:

A P P E N D I X

Some notes on Swift's Gulliver's Travels:

Gulliver finds out that there is a law, proclaimed by the grandfather of
the present ruler, requiring all citizens of Lilliput to break their
eggs only at the little ends. Of course, all those citizens who broke
their eggs at the big ends were angered by the proclamation. Civil war
broke out between the Little-Endians and the Big-Endians, resulting in
the Big-Endians taking refuge on a nearby island, the kingdom of
Blefuscu.[...]

SWIFT's POINT

Swift's point is that the difference between breaking the egg at the
little-end and breaking it at the big-end is trivial. Therefore,
he suggests, that everyone does it in his own preferred way.

We agree that the difference between sending eggs with the little-
or the big-end first is trivial, but we insist that everyone must do it
in the same way, to avoid anarchy.
Since the difference is trivial we
may choose either way, but a decision must be made.

I won't even attempt to present the Chinese characters for 339, it's "somewhat confusing" if Chinese (whichever) isn't one's first language....

As the sun rose the temp here was 14C (felt like 13C) with 24C expected before some more wet weather is set to arrive.

The old spine isn't playing up as much as yesterday, but I still won't be doing much today either.

Anyhow while we bask in sunshine it must be time for another coffee.

Cheers.

153 or 523

Get sick and good grief how much stuff can get cocked up at work. Not enough good swear words. Tomorrow BIG boss and I have to double check some figures. Looks like the tax deposits were made WAY wrong (by his kid)

Sigh.

Now what ale will make me forget while I quaff and feast on a cold sandwich.

Oh, had some of this year's Pliny the Younger. Worse that last years, but better than two years ago.

Well the mercury reached 23C (felt like 21C) here today, but none of that wet weather has made it past the escarpment as yet.

Cheers.

I'll Baudot you on that, with some added Zeus to boot!

Do you realize you are using Arabic numbers? A 2024 survey found that 56% of Americans don't think Arabic numerals should be taught in schools. Maybe if we renamed them American numbers?

On this Saturday morning the sun will be rising behind clouds over the coast again and it's 14C (feels like 13C) with 23C expected along with any possible showers that make it up and over the escarpment.

Anyhow it's coffee time.

Cheers.

ARABIC?! Well in that case ... yes they were really good mathematicians,

Interesting, must have missed when we lost the ability to edit our own subject line.
