Well it doesn't look like I'll be doing much here today so I've decided to do a quick trip into town in an hour to grab a few things for when this weather clears.

Anyhow I might as well get another coffee in before then.

Cheers.

Message 2146024 - Posted: 4 Feb 2025, 21:25:23 UTC - in response to Message 2146020.

Sometimes the use of percussive maintenance works very well on computers. Going back a few years to when I worked for a computer FM company - One site had a computer that was totally rebuilt a few times in its short life (new motherboards, new hard drives, new RAM etc...) In passing I commented to our client that only the case was the same as when it was delivered, and that if the computer landed on the floor it might cure the problems. A week later one of my colleagues drew the short straw (again) and loaded all the expected bits into his car and set off; a couple of hours later he called home for a complete new computer as the troublesome one had been dragged off the desk by an over enthusiastic cleaner and was "somewhat bent and broken". Problem solved, new computer worked perfectly from day one. We never did work out how concrete chips adorned the case when the office was carpeted......

Was there by chance a open window near the computer?

We only managed a steamy 25C (felt like 26C) here today, but it's now a muggy 18C with 13C expected in the morning.

Anyhow that's me for this Hump Day down under.

Cheers.

My car's range is going up, today it showed 67 miles @ 3.2 miles/kWh [...]
Maybe it's not your car or the battery that has improved, but your car has 'trained' you to press the accelerator with an increasingly sensitive, extremely energy-saving foot technique.

NACS was invented by Tesla, but released to the wild where every EV maker has adopted it for use in the US and I presume in Canada as NACS/J3400, I don't know anything about Mexico.
German manufacturers which sell BEV cars in the U.S. use NACS too, btw. They can bring NACS connectors back home to good old Europe as it is just more handy than our 'standardized' bulky and heavy CCS2 AC/DC combo connector. I've seen a video from Norway where people had some difficulties after a cold night in freezing rain conditions to release a CCS2 connector which was frozen on the vehicle inlet.

[EDIT:] words adjusted to terminology standardized by ACEA (Europ. Automobile Manufacturers Association)

31f, it picked up an inch over night, 2 more inches by 2 this afternoon. The heat pump is defrosting on a frequent basis.

... Indeed people are on holiday... Likely squandering their first pay cheque (USA: pay check) of the year?

... Including on holiday are some key people for parts that were to be inspected/checked today... They are not back on duty until Friday! Ho hum?

That's another job kicked over into next week...

All good fun?

At sunrise it was a clear 13C with 26C expected today before those clouds move back in, but whether we'll get anything decent out of then will be another story as we only got 0.25mm yesterday. At least we've missed out on the expected heatwave so far.

Anyhow now that the veggies have been tended too and we're now at a muggy 19C as I'm about to get my 2nd coffee of the morning in.

Cheers.

Overhead is a beautiful crisp clear night sky. The stars are beautifully bright!

Thar'll be a fair fine frost for the morn'...

Back in about 1973, I participated in a fuel efficiency rally. I had a Datsun pickup that normally got about 22 mpg. My father and I tuned it for maximum mileage, and I drove with a very light foot. I managed to squeeze out 64 mpg, which won for a stock pickup truck. Knowing how to drive can really increase your mileage

I had a coworker and a few friends shoehorn a Cleveland 351 into a Datsun pickup. Had to reinforce the chassis frame to take the power difference with a few other mods to get the power train working to the rear wheels. God knows what the mileage was.

My dad tuned a 1972 Mercury Marquis Brougham a 4 door sedan to get 20mpg w/a 460 big block.
That's almost unbelievable. A 460 big block means 460 ci which is 7,538 cm³, a 7.5 litres V8 block; in 1972 still without fuel injection but a carburetor. And 20mpg means 8.5 l/100 km (litres per 100 kilometers). Impressive...

My 12 year's old Swedish 'big block'... (in Europe 'big' means a 2.3 l (140 ci) R4 engine) with modern fuel injection needs this amount of fuel if driven comfortably on the highway.

Yep to mileage (in)efficiency!

My driving style can put + or - up to 10% on the fuel range... Mythbusters did an episode on that...

And I've had to relearn for my latest all-electric vehicle.

It's been actual good fun to test what works well and what doesn't or what doesn't matter. Even better, you get a direct power and energy used reading, so that you can clearly see what techniques work or not.

... So... My driving style is now quite different from when pummeling the old turbo laggy diesel!

I was driving in your area (desert south) back in the '60s and used what was likely the last operational vertical pump.

That was an experience I fondly remember.
