I'm happy to be finally home so that I can put my heavily bandaged leg up after Mt. Everest was removed from it.

After a 12C (felt like 9C) start here we could only manage 16C (felt like 13C) missing the 18C that was expected, but at least I didn't get rained on.

OK I'm using my backup internet, plus I'm using my new clothes washer.

Spectrum is having an outage, again in the area, I'm told this will be fixed by 2am.

When the people installed the GE Profile clothes washer, they hooked up the hoses alrighty, the wrong way, cold on hot and hot on cold, I set the washer for hot I get cold water, If I set the washer for cold I get no water since I have no hot water at the faucet and so the hot is turned off.

Of course using this will take some experimenting to get used to using it.

Sylvester likes the new washer, he can watch the water pour in.

Plus this washer took everything from my clothes hamper, every last bit, the old washer could only do half a load at a time.

No new snow but by 'eck it all feels very chilly!

A steamin' hot pint brew of coffee is called for, for a pause for thought and warmth!...

I'm now regretting having a quick dog nap when I got home as when I got up as those locals started wearing off about then, I should've went the whole hog instead, as I soon got up to feeling all those overlapping stitches started to ache from their pulling.

It's also the 1st time that I've been given antibiotics for having a chunk of skin taken out of me, but they said that there could be problems with shin jobs (2 huge horse caps twice a day :-O).

Anyhow after a few good sized sipping liqueurs while doing a few hours of binging dulling the annoyance I'm going to reset my alarm clock (from a time that I'm usually up well before) to around "Check the rain gauge time" to try and get my body clock back to where it should be.

The temp here was 31F this morning.

To wire up a 60 amp circuit and a 14-60 outlet($91~ Bryant, don't skimp here) that's about 45' from the breaker box will require 4/3 awg armored cable which comes in a 50'($361~) or 100' length if one wants to take the scenic route, I looked and I could only find 75' in unarmored indoor cable.

The NEMA 14-60 outlet and a 14-60 3.75' cable w/a plug on one end is for a 48 amp evse box, but right now I just want to do upgrades to 6awg cable which can go 45' and handle 50 amps, though a 40 amp breaker and 15' of 6/3 awg wire is good enough for what I have now. I could just get the 4/3 armored wire later as it will take up to 100 amps up to 75' from my breaker box and not buy any 6/3, just install the 20 amp 240v breaker and wait.

Grizzl-E makes an 80 amp evse box and it needs to be hardwired to a 100 amp breaker, plus I'd need a 200 amp panel upgrade as my current panel is only rated for 100 amps total. But then an 80 amp evse connection can charge pretty darn quick for a home install, only DC is faster, DC is very expensive, you are either a corporation or a rich dude with lots of money to burn.

Then I noticed something called 15-60, has an outlet and a plug, but no dryer cable, yet, looks promising as it's not compatible with 14-50 or 14-60, 14-60 just has the neutral connection laid out horizontally, 15-60 has both a neutral and a hot horizontally instead of being vertical.

Decisions, decisions...

Well we've made it to 17C (feels like 13C), but if the sun doesn't come out I don't think that we'll get any further than that.

Anyhow I think that I'll get my throbbing leg up further than it is while binge streaming so I'll do a bit of reading for a bit.

Yep...

National Grid have decided that they they are installing a new circuit breaker for us on the only one supply line here... Part of supporting some new equipment to be installed.

And all our backup supplies died long ago and for 'various reasons' have not been maintained or replaced...

And so... Friday morning, 9am prompt, we get cut off while the linesmen do their stuff. All good interesting stuff...

I'm kicking off the shutdown properly at about 1am Friday... Hopefully no damage will be done...

The really interesting part is getting everything running again without anything/anyone getting too upset...


... And for added fun, it's frigid chilly cold with a whiteout of hailstones at the moment.

Full kudos to anyone working outside!

And ya can bet there'll be much unseasonable grumping about not being able to make a cuppa/brew for an hour or so come Friday morning...


(Edit: I do have a 150kW 3-phase power generator 'to hand'... Except it's a chicken-egg game to get that to be wired into circuit in a useful way... Best is to get the mains fixed before fixing things to add that juicy extra...)

My dad knows how to wire a generator up to the mains power. He has a small 5kw generator that will supply 240 v to his residents. Just have to have to shut off the main breaker to avoid energizing anything but the house. Then just turn off all breakers the generator can’t handle. All that is left is to start the portable generator and hook up the 240 volt extension cable.

Yep... That's called operating in "Island Mode"... That is an option to be added... (Note the "added" bit...)

Any sort of interruption lasting more than a few cycles (up to 500ms) causes an immediate automatic shutdown/biff-wallop-bang-OFF(!) of various bits. It's then a case of untangling the ensuing train wreck...

This place needs an automated switch-over, but arranged such that we maintain safety. There's some new bits and careful thought and test needed for that... Nothing 'rocket science', but just awkwardness to accommodate all the bits to avoid anything going inadvertently awry...

(I might yet be arguing to add some small UPSes into the mix... But that's another step. Big cables to be put in place first...)

All good fun, in the snow, hail, wet, and semi-frozen mud... And the murky darkness...
