And a few hours later the death toll has exceeded 1000 :-(Latest report- over 2,000 dead, and over 2,000 injured. Fires, then floods in Greece, an earthquake in Morocco. That area is not having a good run. Grant Darwin NT |

At least 2100 now dead and that number will likely jump by tomorrow as experts explain why it was so bad. :-( Morocco earthquake: Experts say powerful magnitude-6.8 quake 'not unexpected'. |

The death toll is now over 2900 and still climbing. A quarter of this town's population was killed in Morocco's earthquake — some survivors 'feel dead' too. |

Afghanistan earthquake: At least 120 killed and over 1,000 wounded in 6.3 magnitude quake. At least 320 people have died in strong earthquakes that battered northwestern Afghanistan on Saturday, the United Nations has said. |

Death toll exceeds 100 after magnitude-6.4 earthquake hits Nepal. At least 128 people have been killed and dozens injured after an earthquake struck western Nepal on Friday, with witnesses saying houses in the area collapsed and buildings as far as New Delhi, India, shook.Stay safe. |

The south western peninsula of Iceland is shaking well, and a volcanic eruption is expected there any time soon. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

A sensible move is made. Iceland's iconic Blue Lagoon closes as guests leave due to fears of potential volcanic eruption. Iceland's famed Blue Lagoon geothermal spa says it is temporarily closing as a precaution, after thousands of small recent tremors raised fears of a potential volcanic eruption.Stay safe. Cheers. |

The number of quakes in Iceland is getting to the "almost continuous" state, many of them are grater than M3, with a couple poking towards M5. All sorts of alert levels have been set, and the situation is changing by the minute, with an eruption expected somewhere the Blue Lagoon at any time (hours to days). Plans are in place to evacuate Grindavik (the only "town" in the area), but some are already leaving. Yep, that's a lot of earthquakes. |

A update at 11:30 and the town of Grindavik is being evacuated: https://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/a-seismic-swarm-started-north-of-grindavik-last-night (This page is updated periodically, with the hottest news at the top, and each post has a time&date) A couple of notes about the map Carlos posted: The map is updated at roughly 30 minute intervals The green stars are quakes of M>3 Grindavik, the power station mentioned in the link, and the Blue Lagoon are in the middle of the mass of green stars Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

A real time map of the seismic event is available at https://vafri.is/quake/ Some webcams of the area are on Youtube. Fagradalsfjall - Live from Iceland Svartsengi frá Þorbirni I think that in English is Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant. Live webcam from Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland Þorbjörn (Thorbjörn), old volcanic ridge overlooking the Blue Lagoon. Also causing concern is Campi Flegrei, west of Naples on northern edge of the bay, in the Phlegraean Fields. About 14 km from Vesuvius which is on the other side of Naples. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/11/09/europe/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-italy-earthquake-bradyseism-scn/index.html |

No obvious news. But the magma inflow continues, the risk of an eruption near or in Grindavik remains unchanged: [today's update...] https://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/a-seismic-swarm-started-north-of-grindavik-last-night |

Following on from Scrooge McDuck's post. From personal contacts living in Iceland: The area around Grindavik (Iceland) continues to be unstable with more subsidence leading to buildings being damaged & destroyed, roads being made into crazy roller-coasters and ponds getting bigger. Meanwhile the town is deserted, and the people have either relocated themselves to family and friends (Iceland is a very close, family oriented, community) or rented accommodation. They are being offered phycological support by various organisations, but one concern for many is the loss of jobs (Grindavik was a busy fishing & fish processing centre) and thus money (discussions about insurance & state aid take place regularly). So far, apart from gas escapes around Grindavik there has been no "real" volcanic activity, only time will tell if this is going to be "the big one", or just a restless rumble. Map of the area around Grindavik showing how much the land has deformed in recent days: https://en.vedur.is/about-imo/news/bigimg/4511?ListID=0 The scary bit is that the western half of the town has dropped over a metre (say 4-5 feet), while an area to the east has risen by about half a metre (about 2 feet). This map does not show where the cracks in the town have opened up, but most would appear to be running along a north easterly line away from the port which is near the centre of the town. An update from this side of the world on Iceland and the future is looking bleak. :-( Thousands have been evacuated as experts warn “time is up” for an imminent volcano eruption that is expected to burn for centuries. |

An update from this side of the world on Iceland and the future is looking bleak. :-(Regarding Icelandic volcanoes one thinks of the active ones Hekla, Katla, Krafla in the Eastern or Northern volcanic zone which erupted in recent centuries. But there are no volcanoes on the maps of the Reykjanes peninsula near the capital. Iceland's only international airport Keflavik... only 20 kilometers north of Grindavik. Difficult times ahead... Three eruptions have occurred since 2021, which experts say mark the beginning of a new geological era on Iceland’s southwestern peninsula, which had previously laid dormant for 800 years. |

https://www.wired.com/story/iceland-volcano-explode-eruption-when/ wrote: [...] But earlier this month, scientists tracked what appeared to be a huge volume of magma gathering below the Svartsengi area. It quickly rose toward the town of Grindavík last Friday night, stopping just shy of the surface and consequently prompting the town’s swift evacuation. Initial estimates hint that the amount of magma involved is more substantial than the peninsula’s past three eruptions, and it also flowed into the Svartsengi area at an astonishing speed. “Why the magma inflow rate appears to be so much higher this time, and indeed where it was sourced from, remains an important open question,” says Winder. Considering the seemingly hefty volume of magma, the potential for a long-lived eruption, or an otherwise very prolific eruption of lava, is high—but paradoxically, as with many eruptions, it could be that only a fraction of that molten rock sees daylight. |
