It seems that no one wants to conduct a serious discussion about this issue but would rather make stupid jokes that shed no light on potential solutions, probably motor heads.

Well here down under charging stations are going up everywhere (there's even 1 in town now), but a long trip will need a bit of forward planning and time. Our standard 240V system here also makes it much easier to charge from home than those who have to upscale from 120V setup. For longer distances hydrogen/electric is looking to be the best alternative here (especially for heavy vehicles), though pricing is still considered as being too high just ATM, but like everything else it will get cheaper over time.

In the A.C.T. the feds have 2 small test fleets made up of Hyundai Nexo SUV's and Toyota Mirai sedans that are doing extremely well by all reports and as the A.C.T. is powered by hydro, solar and wind it's green hydrogen that they are using down there.

Picking up on a few of the points in your well argued earlier message:
350 mile range - That sounds like a advertising-world range rather than a real-world range. In the real world one has to consider the weather, road conditions and payload (number of passengers). Most advertising ranges are obtained under ideal conditions (dry & warm) with only one or two occupants on "flat" roads and not stuck in traffic. In the real world the weather does not co-operate and the range drops quite dramatically.
European driving habits. Well some of what you say is right, but quite a few of us do want a car that will comfortably do well over 300 miles without having to move into hunting mode - for example to get to either of my nearest relations is about 300 miles, and I want to get to the end without having to worry about covering the last few miles. When my brother was on the road he would regularly cover between 300 and 500 miles per day with only a handful of client stops of about an hour - and that's not unusual for people in tech support and maintenance roles. And given that the range of many of the small electric cars (and vans) have real ranges of about 100 miles, great if you are travelling in and around a city then that's not a problem, but if you then decide to got from London to Birmingham one is going to have to do a top-up charge mid-journey in both directions (plus a rechange at your destination)
Charging networks. In Europe the major cities and main highway networks are well served, but get off those areas and it can be a hundred miles or more between charging locations. The last time I looked at one of the highway service station charging points less than half of them were working , and of those a few were blocked by inconsiderate ****s with ICE engined cars and vans....
China is an interesting case - car ownership is actually quite low outside the cities, and very few people venture beyond their home city, and those that do tend to travel by bus/train/aircraft. Last time I was in China (about 3 years ago) there were quite a number of accessible charge points, and quite a number of electric cars of all sizes. The wild card in China is the "tuk-tuk" - traditionally these small three-wheel trucks/vans are either two-stroke or diesel and the amount of smoke they produce is spectacular! Some of these have been converted to electric by using what appears to be a truck starter motor and a couple of truck batteries (control is achieved by a simple switch).

This week looks like a good week to see what the real-world range of an electric car is....
So I've got a Nissan Leaf for a couple of days, the plan is to charge it up fully then set off for a simulated long drive around the M5/M6/M42 circuit of Birmingham with a couple of diversions to places like Kidderminster and Bridgnorth to get off the highways an onto the byways for a bit. The advertising range is about 240 miles with the big battery or about 170 with the little battery, but what will it do in the real world?

My personal opinion regarding the tipping points isn't necessarily what was stated in the youTube video but I wanted to keep my initial post as brief as possible. In my opinion price and range are still fairly major issues. Much depends on what the vehicle's primary use will be, but if what I hear is true and the authorities are hoping to remove internal combustion engines from all road vehicles within the next decade there are still several issues that need to be addressed. It seems to me that the USA needs to set a national standard for refueling stations so that a driver can set out on a journey without having to plan out every little detail in advance, like knowing which charging stations are compatible with your vehicle. I also wonder about reasonable expectations for battery life since batteries are responsible for about 75% of an electric vehicle's cost. My cell phone's battery is capable of being recharged only a limited number of times before it will no longer keep a charge for any length of time whether it is being used or not. So unless we are to be expected to trade in a vehicle every time it's battery looses it's ability to hold a charge how will the average driver be able to afford to replace his/her car's power source. There is another issue that wasn't even mentioned at all. The effect of automobile accidents on passengers and the repairability of vehicles needs to be looked at.

Are the power lines that go down behind the row of houses able to charge a couple dozen EV's at once, as they will have to when everyone gets home from work?
I think this is going to be the bottleneck.
All I have to say is PG&E can't seem to keep their lines from sparking wildfire. Texas freezes its power grid. Just how much work is going to be needed?

I see my local government sited its big charging station in a disused parking lot of the local power plant. Perhaps they know something that the politicians don't.

Please Point Out to Me - With My Initial Post - My NOT Wanting Answers to Transitioning to ELECTRIC VEHICLEs and Potential Problems in Doing So.

Ever Run Out of Gas? I have a few times. If one has a 1, 2 or 5 Gallon Can of Gas in Trunk or Strapped to Back Door, One Would Crack Open Gas Cap; Pour in da 'Juice' and Continue on Ones Way.

I've Walked 4 Hours for Help 'cause of No Back Up Gas Can.

As An Electric Vehicle Runs OUT of 'Juice', What is One to Do?

People Wizzing by with Cans of Gas or a Hose to Syphon {although Most Cars Now won't allow a tube to reach down to tank?} You be Good to Go if One Stopped to 'Help'.

I've Heard NO TALK/Discussion 'bout da Electric Car Age and One 'Running' out of 'Juice' aka Electrons.

A Person would have to Carry with them a Small GAS POWERED Generator with Appropriate 'Connection' 'Plug' to 'Juice Up' and Continue on Ones Way.

Or SomeOne Would have to Stop and Help - If They Had APPROPRIATE Needs as Stated - and Get You
On your Way.

Or Electric Cars Can Carry 'Juicing Cables' which would Connect from Their Car to Yours. But this would
Severely 'Drain' Their Own Batteries and They May End Up STRANDED.
Or Electric Cars will have to Be Equipped with GAS Generators which 'KIck' In and Provide Needed Electrons. How IRONIC: GAS still Needed. Rolling Man, Rolling.

Not Everyone will Want a Hybrid. Certainly GREENIEs Don't want ANY GAS ANYWHERE Being Used.

Having Same Type 'Plugs' would Definitely be Needed on Both Vehicles.

So, One Runs Out of 'Juice' and Is STRANDED.

Will There Be Help? Besides Calling a 'Service' to Come Out from SomeWhere to 'CHARGE' YOU?

I haven't Heard Any Talk from The Industry 'bout This.

Certainly, This has been THOUGHT OUT by da Brainiacs of da Industry.

I can see da News Stories Now 'bout ALL The STRANDED Electric Vehicles.

The Leaf arrived last night, on the back of a truck with about 7 miles of charge on (in?) it.
Why one may ask, indeed I did. The answer was very simple, it had arrived back from the previous user earlier in the day with only a few miles range left, and the garage's charging point was broken - a very good start and sales pitch I must say. Put it on charge using the 13A (about 3kw capable), and the car nicely told me it would take a l-o-n-g time to charge (over 14 hours), so I left it charging over night (it's go the little 42kw battery), this morning still about 6 hours charging to go. This is a really good start (not).
Using my crushed dinosaur fuel car to go shopping this morning......

OK, I've now suffered enough range anxiety for January, and probably the rest of the year.....
The leaf took 16 hours to get its 42kW battery charged, and consumed 47kW in doing so. Obviously there are losses in charging any battery so that's not too bad.
Now comes the circular trip, 107 miles of mixed roads and traffic. According to the advertising range that should have been easy-peasy... Set of from home with a theoretical range of 168 miles and travelled the 1 mile to the highway, range has now dropped to 159 miles - a portent of things to come? The first 40 odd miles were fairly clear of traffic and I held a steady 65mph (indicated), at the end of this section the range was down to 100 miles remaining. Now came the twisty back rods bit, and the range fell by about 1.5 miles for every mile covered for the next forty miles - this is going to be tight.... final 20 odd miles, and the range was falling like a brick, ended up at 3 miles left after the 107 mile trip......
Phoned the garage to say they can collect the car as soon as they like. They can't do it until Monday.... Was transferred to the salesman I spoke to when arranging this loan, the conversation went along the lines "When do you want to take delivery Sir?", "Never, or at least until you can get the real world range to over 200 miles" "Oh, it's range is 170 miles" "Like heck, I've just flattened the battery on a fairly typical 100 mile trip" "I'll get the sales manager to phone you back" "Don't waste his time, the Nissan Leaf falls well short of what I need in a car and has dropped off my shopping list" "Why" "I just old you, the real world range is a long way bellow the advertising world range, so I'm not in the least bit interested in in".
