Hubble Telescope's payload computer is down. NASA has spent days trying to fix it.

It looks like NASA will have to boot a backup computer which was not booted since 2009. Of course it uses technnologies from the Eighties.

Nasa will attempt to fix a problem that has stopped the Hubble telescope from being used for astronomy.

It's the worst glitch in years to hit the venerated observatory.

An onboard computer halted on 13 June, leading to the science instruments being put in "safe mode" - where all non-essential systems are shut down.

It looks like a problem with power supply. A computer without electricity is useless. A recent blackout due to a thunderstorm shut down all my 4 PCs. When electricity came back, I wa able to restart three of them. Only an old laptop running Linux would not start. As a last resort, I unplugged its AC power line, since its battery was dead, then reattached it. It rebooted.

Maybe Elon Musk, if he sees a propaganda opportunity, will have his orbiter modified in some fashion to be able to make a service call on Hubble to fix the ailing computer.

Hubble telescope spots 'squabbling' galaxies locked in a cosmic dance.

The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted two 'squabbling' galaxies that are locked in a cosmic dance — one that can only end in one of two dramatic ways.

Either the smaller one will be engulfed by its neighbour or else it will be tossed out into intergalactic space, experts from the European Space Agency (ESA) have said.

The larger barred spiral galaxy is known as NGC 7753 and seemingly attached to one of its spiral arms is its smaller companion, dubbed NGC 7752.

The pair are 220 million light-years away from Earth in the Pegasus constellation.

There's still a lot of life in it yet.

A group of astronomers using the Chandra X-ray space telescope may have found an exoplanet in th e Whirlpool galaxy (M51, if I remember well). It is orbiting a binary ystem including a neutron star, When the neutron star or a possible black hole captures material from its massive companion, it emits X-rays. Since the size of the compact object is small, a planet transiting in front of lit blocks this emisssion sharply and this drop is registered by the Chandra telescope. The system is 28 million light years away.
