GUIYANG, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, will be available for global service from April 1. The National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the operator of the telescope, confirmed Monday that scientists across the world can make online appointments for using the device for observation from April 1. An allotted timetable will be available by Aug. 1. Jiang Peng, chief engineer of FAST with NAOC, said in the first year of the telescope's opening to the global scientific community, about 10 percent of the observation time will be allocated to foreign scientists. "Chinese scientists also need to comply with the online application formality," Jiang said. Located in a deep and round karst depression in southwest China's Guizhou Province, FAST is believed to be the world's most sensitive radio telescope. It started formal operations on Jan. 11, 2020. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-01/04/c_139641078.htm |

BEIJING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish and most sensitive radio telescope, will officially open to the world starting Wednesday. Astronomers worldwide can visit http://fast.bao.ac.cn/proposal_submit to submit their applications for observations, said the National Astronomical Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in a statement. All foreign applications will be evaluated, and the results will be announced on July 20. Observations by international users will begin in August. The statement noted that FAST will provide its research facilities to the world with a more open attitude, offering more observation options for the international astronomical community. The project will contribute Chinese wisdom to the construction of a community with a shared future for humanity, and strive to promote international sci-tech development and the progress of human civilization, said the statement. Since it started operation, FAST has provided stable and reliable services. It has found 300 pulsars and made breakthroughs in fields like fast radio bursts, a type of powerful radio wave in the sky. ? http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2021-03/30/c_139847428.htm |
