OK, another reminder about the use of punctuation marks. First hyphens -generally these are NOT allowed, there are very few words in the English language that use them. Where the two parts are each word in their own right a hyphen is NOT permitted, so just post one of the words - in the most recent case "Greko-Roman" was posted, both "Greko" and "Roman" are words in their own right so either could be posted. Then we have apostrophises. When used before a final "s" they are not part of the word but an indicator of possession. In the most recent case "Rally's", my question is "Rally has a what?", simply don't add that apostrophe and "S" let people work out what you were thinking. Please note that names like "O'Reilly" are permissible. Both people are now crowded into the chair in Rocky's for a round or two.... And it breaks the rule regardless of the abuse of the apostrophe in adverting. The sign implies that the store belongs to, or was founded by Rally. In the same way as the English green grocers abusing the apostrophe when describing plurals as in pricing apples "Apple's £3.00 per pound" should be written as "Apples £3.00 per pound". (And don't forget that there are two people buying so you can have TWO "rounds", one on each of their tabs.) In German we call it „Deppenapostroph“ (idiot’s apostroph). Possession is indicated by the genitive case where normally an „s“ is added to nouns, e.g.: „Peters Kneipe“ (Peter‘s pub). The overwhelming influence of English language; US/UK culture to German language leads to the widespread abuse of apostrophes everywhere in advertising, signs… names of shops, restaurants…an unstoppable malaise. |

Canada has basically legislated apostrophe (or lack thereof) abuse. Our best-known example: It was founded by Tim Horton... why isn't it Tim Horton's ? Well, because if it was, as the apostrophe-s 's possessive is not used in French, every logo in Quebec including on all the signage, cups, paperware etc. would need to also have "Chez Tim Horton" or equivalent added. :^p |

That said, he believes me to be a heathen as I do have pineapple on pizza so you are safe :-) Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |
