Message 2047485 - Posted: 29 Apr 2020, 2:07:35 UTC

Per Eric on FB

Eric Korpela There are currently 17234 workunits that don't have a validated result. Once they are finished nothing more should go out. During normal operations, that would have been about 10 minutes worth. But a lot of people quit in May without returning their results. We've sent everything out again in an attempt to speed things up. I'd guess a few days more before those most of those results are back and validated.

I think Eric is going to have to re-think that. Here are the next timeout dates for my 7 remaining pendings:

30 Apr 2020, 1:16:50 UTC
5 May 2020, 5:35:49 UTC
6 May 2020, 12:11:46 UTC
6 May 2020, 19:59:46 UTC
9 May 2020, 21:44:06 UTC
17 May 2020, 21:57:17 UTC
10 Jun 2020, 17:04:15 UTC
The May timeouts are all the initial deadline when the task was first issued. They've each had three re-issues, all of which have ended up in a black hole.

The June timeout has already had the original deadline expire, so this is when the first of the resends will timeout.

So we could have another 6 weeks to wait unless somebody kicks something intelligent.

My inconclusives (each: 5 tasks, 2 initial, 3 resends... 3 tasks in progress); _n..task and status (task duration or MIA):
All have deadlines at Apr 29 (initial repl.) and June for the resends

https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=3916876814 _0: ghosted, _2: MIA, _3: ~45 days
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=3934727469 all: MIA
https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=3920234308 _0: MIA, _3: ~13 days, _4: ~4 days (there's hope!)

So there's hope timeout&resend at Apr 29 (today) will finish all of them very fast.

(erroneous resend script). Richard Haselgrove replied somewhere to this before at Apr 5 and pointed to: Discussion and Erics reply.
[EDIT]: first post discussing this
[EDIT2]: too many tasks replicated which exceeds WUs' max task number treshold (10)

Me as a user, across all of my hosts, I have just 60 Pending tasks remaining.

ALL 60 (I checked them all) of them are awaiting the response from one of at least 4 other hosts which the WU was sent to. WU's that were originally sent to me in mid-March and I returned within a day. So in these 60 instances, all of the progressive resends made their way into a black hole, and the latest deadline is mid to late June, worst case if they all timeout it'll need to be sent to someone else with an even longer deadline.

this is how the fairweather hit-n-run crunchers affect things when the deadlines of the project are too long. but yeah, lets all blame the "hoarders" LOL. at least they are actively working them.

The only drama now is on the server status page. Will Astropulse finish it data set before Seti or vice-versa?

I'm at zero/zero/three; only three "validation inconclusive" waiting to clear.

I have 1 pending and 11 inconclusives to go, but I'll let the rest of you finish it off as I'm not wasting my time anymore doing resends that have already got their conical results in before I get those resends done.

Cheers.

Watching inconclusives is also pure drama and highly entertaining:

  • wait patiently for the deadline: Apr 29 23:55:45 UTC
  • timeout & get to know the next wingman ...
  • WTF? Doh!

EDIT: it's a noise bomb... only 20 seconds CPU time....
EDIT2: It's done... after 44 days.

. . Looking at the outstanding wingmen on my remaining tasks there is a mixture of old tasks (probable delinquent hosts) and recent resends which are more likely due to hosts caching more work than they can reasonably process (remember, I believe 24 hours is a reasonable cache, especially now that we are in 'mop-up' mode) so the blame can be spread kind of evenly. The critical difference is that the delinquents will never return a result so those tasks will hit deadline while the over-zealous 'hoarders' are still processing work and will return a result probably well before deadline, but this point has been made many times. Just remember ... "THE END IS NIGH!"

Pendings are gone. Inconclusives too. Some valids still there. I thank you slow crunchers, you hoarders and you deserting black holes. When the last of you is gone and the tasklist finally empty...

And the earth will be without form, and void, and darkness will be upon the face of the deep...
