By the last statistics there will by about 200 000 SETI orphan hosts. Where they will go? Even a fraction of such large number of hosts will hit hard any project they choose to stay. There will be some interesting times in the following months for the others projects admins. In my case i still not decided what to do or what will be my new step house. |

I've been wondering what effect this news will have on the rest of the scientific community? Will they ... ... see lots of skilled users with powerful computers, ready to take on a new area of science? ... mis-understand and read it (wrongly) as the beginning of the end of the BOINC platform as a whole? |

By the last statistics there will by about 200 000 SETI orphan hosts. Perhaps we should all set up a new team called Seti Orphans, and go invade another project.. ? :-) Humans may rule the world...but bacteria run it... |

Some will see it as the end of BOINC, others will see an increase in their headcount. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Some will see it as the end of BOINC, others will see an increase in their headcount. I sincerely hope it is never an end to BOINC. Even if I can't have my preferred project. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

I'll go to a project that has an open source code for Nvidia GPUS and an off-line test suite similar to Seti@home. To overcome Heisenbergs: "You can't always get what you want / but if you try sometimes you just might find / you get what you need." -- Rolling Stones |

Does Serendip have a bionic project? also i presume that there is not a way to help analyze the Nebula data? |

Mine are now doing Androids, Universe and Einstein. But that's mostly because they weren't getting Seti tasks anyway. :) |

I've been looking at Einstein as a new home. They were friendly enough to open a spot in their boards to let us chat on Tuesdays, so that earns them bonus points in my book. How is their uptime? do they have a weekly outage? do I need to configure my system differently? |

Does Serendip have a bionic project? I believe all the Serendip processing takes place in real-time on dedicated hardware. Independently to that, s@h processes the same source data more slowly but to much deeper sensitivity. For Nebula, you can take a look at: Instructions for evaluating Nebula output Perhaps this is where some of the Nebula project pages need updating to most usefully direct any/all available help?... How is their uptime? do they have a weekly outage? do I need to configure my system differently? E@H is "always" up E@H does not have weekly outages just occasional system patches Your system should function fine but you will probably want to look at their preferences in you account page. I've been happy there since 25 Feb 05 |

E@H does not have weekly outages So where is the fun? No moon to hollow, hair to burn, virgin to sacrifice, goes to the pub... |

Personally I was just pondering what I was going to do for this years WOW event. Whether in fact I would enter at all as it struck me last year as not very environmentally friendly. Seems the decision has been taken out of my hands. I will crunch on my 4 main machines until there is nothing left to crunch, then I will be left with 5 750 Ti's, 2 1050's, 2 1060, and a 970 with nothing to do. Whether I will crunch for another project remains to be seen, SETI was really the only one that ever interested me. |

There's been some talk to resurrect one of the Einstein@home challenges to take place in the same period that WOW used to occupy. I would hope that most Seti volunteers believe in the concept of distributed computing and will continue to work for other projects as citizen scientists. Who knows you may discover the next miracle protein, planet-killer asteroid or what the heck is dark matter and dark energy. I have a credit citation for a paper at GPUGrid finally. I would hope that most Seti volunteers believe in the concept of distributed computing and will continue to work for other projects as citizen scientists.+1 I signed up for MilkyWay as a backup project a decade ago. When the Seti results stop flowing I will also probably join GPUGrid and Rosetta, and maybe Einstein. MilkyWay (BOINC client) never really did what I wanted it to "automatically", usually had to control it manually. I'm probably going to have a heck of a time trying to get all of them to peacefully co-exist when the time comes. Guess it will be time for new challenges. |

E@H does not have weekly outages We can still party over @ the S@H is down cafe and lament, burn hair go to the pub and sacrifice as we see fit. See you next Tuesday. |

MilkyWay (BOINC client) never really did what I wanted it to "automatically", Strange, MW is one of the few set and forget and never have to mess with it projects I run. Has a fixed limit on the number of tasks it allows on a host and reasonable deadlines I have never missed. Strange, MW is one of the few set and forget and never have to mess with it projects I run. Has a fixed limit on the number of tasks it allows on a host and reasonable deadlines I have never missed. If it had a reasonable resource share it would behave, but if I gave it a tiny one just to keep it around in the background, it wouldn't. With shares down to 2% it would get 300+ tasks then go into panic mode to make the deadline when it approached. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but after about 2 months it would get on my nerves. Wound up setting NNT and manually connecting every so often to get about 150 tasks and set it back to NNT. You're right it has never been greedy to the point of over committing what the system is capable of, just not respecting its boundaries. Guess it's more of a BOINC client problem than MW, but I don't think that will be an issue in the future because I wouldn't be as protective of other projects as I am of SETI. As long as they work it out in the end, I'll let them fight it out among themselves for the most part. |
