Just like at the start of the new century most people are jumping the gun by one year. The decade runs from 2011-2020. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Just because way back when some peoples didn't have a concept of zero so they counted minus 2, minus 1, plus 1, plus 2 when we all know the count is minus 2, minus 1, zero, plus 1, plus 2. But never mind that, back then it was the Julian calendar, now we use the Gregorian calendar heavily modified with recent things like leap seconds. Because of all of these thing we really don't know precisely when the first year began relative to our present precision of time keeping. Heck when Krakatoa blew it changed earth's rotation period and we don't have timing with atomic clocks to know exactly how much. We simply can't accurately time events over 2000 years so we really don't know when zero was crossed. There there was Y2K. Far too much hype. Year zero was born. |

But the AD years didn't start at 0 they started at 1 thus 1-10, 11-20 etc., etc. thru 2011-2020. First grade I was taught to count 1-10, zero didn't come along until later. Bob, zero was always there, the fact that you didn't see it does not preclude its existence. All counting starts with zero. |

When you are counting objects on a table do you start with zero? No, you start with 1. Otherwise ten objects would be called 9. In everything but mathematics you start with one. Also the Romans had no zero. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Also the Romans had no zero.Actually you do start with zero, there are no objects on the table, zero objects Then you go to one, two etc. And since years do have zeros in them (eg 2020), zero is the start. Hence this is the start of the new decade. Grant Darwin NT |

Get the "experts" to start at 1, we'll follow suit. :-) The 2010s were the second hottest and second wettest of the "cardinal" decades (those spanning years ending 0-9) in the last 100 years of UK records. |

Think about it Bob, if you started at the 1's then you wouldn't of really had the 30's, 40's, 50's ,60's ,etc, etc,....... Cheers. |

1-9 not glamorous enough. Unless one considers being stuck on 7 of 9. :-) |

And we did celebrate 2000 as well Bob, for only entering a new millennium, when still a new century ahead of us, for only just a year. Make it 400 years earlier, for only back in time, and still a leap year for that as well, except still not any Jupiter moons discovered. |

According to most sources both arguments are right depending on your point of view. Like in a tall building where counting begins at 1 (the first floor), ever hear it called floor zero? In Germany (and most likely many other countries*) the first floor is above the ground floor. *These are the countries where I've been and noticed floor numbering. Also, this is giving me a headache. ~Sue~ |

Relevant, I think: https://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2019/12/31 I tried to link just to the cartoon, but it wasn't possible. They're very protective of their stuff over there. ~Sue~ |

In Japan babies are one when born, in most of the rest of the world they are zero. [note Japan has mostly Westernized]. That being the case, then there must have been a year zero. |
