Fish 'rained from the sky', outback community says, in freak weather event.

Residents of a remote outback community have been left marvelling at the heavens as fish "rained from the sky" in a surprising, but not unheard of, weather event.

Locals in Lajamanu, a community 560 kilometres south-west of Katherine on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert, said they were stunned to see the fish drop during heavy rainfall.

"We've seen a big storm heading up to my community and we thought it was just rain," Lajamanu local and Central Desert councillor Andrew Johnson Japanangka said.

"But when the rain started falling we've seen fish falling down as well."

This is not the first time the strange weather event has swept through the community.

The same phenomenon occurred in Lajamanu in 2010, and was also reported in 2004 and as far back as 1974.

Weather experts believe incidents like these can be caused by strong updrafts, such as tornadoes, which suck water and fish from rivers and dump them hundreds of kilometres away....

While down in South Aussieland Nearly two months after the flood peak passed, the South Australian River Murray town of Paisley is still in a pool of water, and residents have been left wondering why authorities did not do more to help them in the first place, and there's still good flows coming down the Murray Darling system. Though there are a few rivers in that system that are having a hard time draining now.

Our weather stats for this February in the Northern Tablelands saw our average low being down by 1.1C at 11.7C while the av. max was up by 1.1C at 26.8C. The av. rainfall was also down again falling 15mm short with 75mm and behind on our av. year to date total of 188.7mm with just 120.5mm.

While the outback floods here have provided many benefits there's a feral pest, that we can certainly do without, whose population is exploding. :-(

Fishers catch up to 18,000 carp as flooded Murray Darling Basin sees population boom.

Hundreds of people from across Australia have helped to remove thousands of carp from an iconic South Australian lake, in an attempt to put a dent in the pest fish's population.

Carp boomed after extensive flooding throughout the Murray Darling Basin system in late 2022 and early 2023, including in SA's Riverland region.

Griffith University Australian Rivers Institute researcher Mark Kennard said while numbers were already high, recent floods saw carp populations grow to astronomical levels.

He said the National Carp Control Plan found the national biomass of carp in Australian waterways could range from 200,000 to 1 million tonnes under ideal breeding conditions.....

...Kym Manning said the fishing contest, which encouraged people to catch as many carp as possible in one day, was a sustainable way of helping to drive down fish numbers.

"All carp caught get put on an ice slurry and chilled down and sent to a local fisherman’s freezer … before they’re sent off to Deniliquin and turned into fertiliser," he said.

Mr Manning said the annual competition held on the shores of Lake Bonney continued to grow, with more than 800 people travelling from New South Wales, Victoria and SA to take part this year.

"We caught around 5.7 tonnes of carp in total, which is somewhere between 15,000 to 18,000 fish," he said.

"After the floods, a lot of the campsites haven't re-opened around the lake yet, but people turned up and supported the event … and this was the best one yet."...

There's a lot of fertiliser out there people, get into them. ;-)

Unprecedented flooding sparks evacuations in north-west Queensland, Gulf of Carpentaria

Unfortunately, i can't find any pictures to show what the place usually looks like relative to it's position with the river, but Camooweal has been hit by record flooding. The Puma roadhouse at the start of the video in the linked story is about 500m from the river, and quite a bit above the main channel.
It's just a mind-boggling amount of water going down the Georgina River to reach as far as the roadhouse (after a few thousand km it will eventually make it's way to Lake Eyre).
The Gregory River at Riversleigh previous record high was 10.8m in 1971. It's currently at 18m.

Oh, and following the flooding that wiped out the Fitzroy River Crossing bridge (estimated time to repair/replacement varies between 2-3 years), the other main route to northern WA has been closed for several days due to the Victoria River Crossing bridge being under water. The bridge deck is 19.5m high, the river peaked at 22m.
While the water is now back well below the bridge deck, it's looking like a day or 3 before it will be opened to traffic again, pending engineering assessments.

That pesky tropical low is still causing problems in the north as the rain is just starting to cross the border with a drenching expected here tonight and right on through the weekend.

Gulf residents prepare for mass evacuation as record Queensland floods continue.

Burketown's airstrip is partially flooded and helicopters are being used fly people to safety.

In the 48 hours to Thursday morning 533 millimetres of rain fell in the Nicholson, Gregory and Leichhardt river catchments.

Authorities say some rivers have reached "unknown levels", damaging critical infrastructure and knocking out part of the Telstra network....

While two decades is short in terms of climate trends, the data since 2005 shows climate change could be altering how major weather drivers impact Australia.
