AfterNet, IRC4Fun and UnderNet (either for #SETI@home or #SETI) indeed have their regulars, which might be (or in your case, might not be) bots or humans idling afk :)

On similar topics, freenode's ##astronomy, ##science & #space are also worthy of consideration imho ^^
