MS to Fix Broken Windows Update with New Rollout Microsoft is trying a new method for releasing and managing Windows 10 updates. The aim is to reduce the number of bugs where an update doesn't install properly. |

I've been busy for a few days converting some rather old Linux systems over to some new hosting elsewhere on some very different Linux systems... OK, so we had the completely expected problem of somewhat different configs, but that was expected. What has really impressed me is that even for some radical conversions of databases, once we realigned the configs to the new formats: It is all just working. Fantastic. The big 'take-home' aspect is the visibility available of what is happening on a Linux system (systemd obfuscation excepted!). We have complete control of what updates we use and what versions we can migrate through, or even the choice of a nuclear-option conversion in one big jump via a standards compliant jump. There always seems to be a way, and it works. In painful contrast, I still have nightmares from when I was given a Windows based database that Must Be Recovered to find that it was an obscure proprietary version with no compatibility with anything current. That one took some country-wide contacts to spirit up a virtual machine archive from elsewhere in the country 'as a favor' so that we could even get to take a look at what the data was. Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!! (That one cost a few beers!) Lock-in is simply bad. Don't accept it! IT is what we make it... I flipping hate Win10 & its crap! Approx. 20 min ago, noticed my RAC down by approx. 500. Checked this rig, no problems. Checked Win 10 rig - ouch. A new update installed. Instead of asking for the pin it wanted my password to "verify" it is me. WTF? Entered password twice, both times got "incorrect". Okay - reset it. Got code to mobile & entered, reset & thought ok, job done. Now back to this rig (Win 7), entered e-mail. Password incorrect, ok, thought that might happen, so entered new password... ...incorrect - old password. WHAT? Just reset the flipping thing. Okay, had this crop up numerous time with M$ crap so tried new tactic after a further 2 attempts failed. Bingo, good to go, except now had to restart Boinc manually. When these rigs give up the ghost, there is no way in hell, M$ will see sight of new rig! Funny thing is... ...on reboot, it asked for PIN. It remembered that but not the password? Sheesh. |

What the ...! Really?... ... As it turns out, the same issue existed earlier this month when the patches were optional, but now they’re rolling out to everyone with the same problems still present... What the ...! Hi Martin, Good thing I quit gaming then. This PC and my new laptop are running v20H2. They haven't been "updated" for quite some time now. ;-) Perhaps Micro$oft should just give up on Winders 10 for good. :-) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? There might be a fix for the borked Win 10 Update that is causing high CPU use when nothing is running: Windows Update May Solve High CPU Usage Bug The main point of interest in KB5001391 is a fix for a memory problem. Microsoft hasn't made things entirely clear but it appears it's targeted at recent reports of users suddenly seeing their CPU usage rocket to the point that their computer slows down or even becomes unresponsive. This is a curious turn-around: And for turning around again, we have this for the latest tests: Windows 10 Build 21370 vs. Ubuntu 21.04 Linux On AMD Ryzen 5900X ... That unexpectedly strong showing for Windows 10 might be due to Intel's P-State behavior with Rocket Lake or other power management tuning ... it led me to wondering if the latest Windows 10 updates spelled out anything different on the AMD Ryzen side... So here are some benchmarks of the latest Microsoft Windows 10 against Ubuntu 21.04... What a curious difference for those results! IT is what we make it...
