Thanks for info.I've used a tweak program since the days of XP (TweakXP}. Windows has always had a few things that niggled me that I dislike but Tweak took care of them. Winaero Tweaker for Win 10 took care of Win 10. That is until I restarted rig yesterday afternoon & found many of those niggles back. It updated to version 2004. :-( Winaero took care of them. Only remaining problem now is to get back my the 2 gadgets I used. Clock & Calendar. MS disabled widgets for security reasons, understandable. What is not understandable is WHY do they have Widgets HD available in the MS Store (& a crap version at that)? Edited to fix url. |

Has Micro$aft finally woke up and smelled the burning electrons? Windows 10 Update Schedule Could Change Microsoft is reportedly planning to only have one major update to Windows 10 next year. It could be a permanent switch and appears inspired by requests to have Microsoft spend more time testing updates before releasing it to the public. |

Windows 10 Bug Could Strain Hard Drives Microsoft is testing a fix for a bug that could theoretically shorten the lifespan of some hard drives. The bug means Windows 10 was mistakenly running the defrag tool more frequently than designed. |

Windows 10 Bug Could Strain Hard Drives Wow! I thought defragging was the bane of the FAT filesystems from the 1990's... Have we not since moved onto radically more modern journaling filesystems that have long since consigned that historical chore to the bit bucket? (Aside: Scarily, yet another version of NTFS is currently being added into the Linux kernel!...) I'm still on 1909 and I'm getting the periodic reminder about the MS account "benefits". I'm quite happy not backing up my harddrive to the cloud, or linking my phone, or using the office suite as a service. wondering if there is a way to disable this periodic reminder. |

For those long claiming that 'obscurity' and 'proprietary' and secrecy' are somehow 'good' to somehow ensure some sort of security... Think again?... ... The source code for Windows XP and other elderly Microsoft operating systems appears to have leaked online... Note that there is a lot in there that is still current and in use today. Is not "secure by design" and "open peer review" a far better way to go?... Looks like Microsoft has to go "Open Source" all the way with this! (Dread to think what dubious comments there 'might' be in that unsanitized code!!) IT is what we make it... Is this the last of the extreme exclamations? Microsoft will release a web browser for Linux next month. Repeat, Microsoft will release {their Edge} browser for Linux – and it uses Google's technology wrote: This means Linus Torvalds has definitely won, doesn't it? Hell really has frozen over!!!??? The long forgotten skeletal spectral influence of Netscape is still haunting the web?... Have the Microsoft people read Good Omens by any chance?!... Gobsmacked! IT is what we make it! Windows will become an emulation layer on Linux kernel. Interesting commentary, especially the finance side of Windows development. Windows will become an emulation layer on Linux kernel. Interesting commentary, especially the finance side of Windows development. It won't work unless a lot of native Windows apps that people "have to have" are ported over/upgraded... Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Windows will become an emulation layer on Linux kernel. Interesting commentary, especially the finance side of Windows development. That is what Wine and Proton are for. No need to port any apps. Just run your existing Windows apps. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Windows will become an emulation layer on Linux kernel. Interesting commentary, especially the finance side of Windows development. I have seen reports that Wine is not able to run "everything." Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

WINE publishes a list of applications that will run. There are a number of applications that will run out of the box, some need a bit of fiddling, and others just won't Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Micro$h1t is at it again forcing crap on your PC with out permission because they know better than you or what is best for everyone. Windows 10 Brings MS Office Start Menu Surprise Microsoft has added links to Office web apps on Windows 10 computers without asking permission. It's more of an irritation than a damaging problem, but it's certainly safe to say some folks are irritated. |
