Wow!Are you sure that you know the difference between RAM and storage capacity Martin? Good note, the 32GBytes is indeed for (disk) storage and not system RAM... (I was a little too fast on the speed reading!) Then again, an accepted practical minimum for running Windows 10 is more like 8GBytes with 16GBytes needed as soon as you start using any large documents... So a jump to 32GBytes was (is?) all too plausible... (Good excuse? ;-) ) Regardless, good call! IT is what we allow it to be... Microsoft is going to increase transparency over what they gather, what's really needed to make Windows and Office work. They're going to give you more options to set what they gather: https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2019/04/30/increasing-transparency-and-customer-control-over-data/ First, for all our major products, we’ll categorize the data we collect from devices as either required or optional. They'll just keep pushing you for your data. I'm in the market for a new system later this year, but am seriously doubting I will willingly put Win10 on it. That though depends on if any of the Linux distros has full support for the Radeon VII. |

Greetings, Greetings, Just over a week and that freakin' "UPDATE", listed above, busted my File Explorer... AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is getting fraking ridiculous! Uninstall time... AGAIN!!! :( And then install time... AGAIN!!! :( To get support from Micro$oft one needs to pay them like $200.00 bucks, is that right? If so, that's probably why I have never gone to them for support, ever! Have a great day! :) Siran [edit] Ok, File Explorer is back again for another 10 days. :| [/edit] CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, Why doesn't Micro$oft just take all settings away from us????? They do not abide by them anyway, so why have them. I have security updates set to wait for 30 days before ramming it down my PC's throat. Every time I uninstall that broken POS of an update, that keeps breaking File Explorer, within an hour it's cramming it back on my PC as it has about 15 minutes ago. I am so close to dumping Winblows 10 and putting Linux on this machine. Thing is though, what do I do about the programs that I use daily that don't have a Linux version such as Discord, World of Warcraft, Star Trek: Online, etc., etc., etc.! I guess I'll continue with it until such time that I get a window that pops up telling me that if I want to continue using Winblows 10, I need to enter a credit / debit card number so that Micro$oft can steal my money. lol ;) This PC has an record up-time of 20 days, 19 hr and 48 min. Since getting my Linux PC going just over a month ago, I've had to re-boot it once, and only because it was critical that I did. We had a power outage for about 1/2 hour or so and the UPS can only maintain power to it for a few minutes just to shut down gracefully. My Winblows PC, something or other comes along and requires it to be re-booted. I'm tired of it! :( Dang it, I really have gotten to hate Micro$oft! :( Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I'll probably get a chorus of gripe replies about security issues, but it's your computer so just ignore them. :^) It's very easy to permanently block updates in Windows 10, or at least as much as I know. Go into the start menu, type "Services" until the Services app pops up, launch it. Find the Windows Update service, right-click it, choose Properties. Set the service to Disabled and OK. As far as I know Windows will not put it back on. ![]() |

World of Warcraft can be played under Linux with Steam. Star Trek: Online can be played under Steam also. Also Discord for Linux is available. I used it last Seti Germany WoW contest. In case you wanted to know what games can be played on Linux, the Steam database search engine is the first place to check. https://steamdb.info/ Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I prefer GOG (formerly Good Old Games until they started selling new releases) myself... Here is their Linux library. ![]() |

Hi Keith, Steam does not have World of Warcraft, at least I could not find it in any searches in the database, and only has Star Trek Online for Winblows. I would have to see about getting them to run in Wine. I've seen on the Internet where it can be done, with a lot of work and patience. I did a search for Discord before seeing your post and saw that they do have a Linux version. :) I'll go back to Steam and do some more searches for WoW. :) Thanks Keith and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? I wonder if you could run Windows in a VM box under Linux? That way you would have the authentic(?) interface(s) for the games but you could still run Bonic/Seti.... I like the idea of disabling the "update" service. Snicker, that is a "work around" I hadn't thought of. Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

I can't find the post that said WoW could be played on Steam now. But it can be played if you add it manually to your library it seems. https://chimpeon.com/help/101_detail?id=18 Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I wonder if you could run Windows in a VM box under Linux? Absolutely... in VirtualBox (which is in most of the distros' repositories.) It's even what BOINC uses. VMWare Player and KVM are two other options. Google any of them and there are many sites with step-by-step directions. Edit: Here is a walkthrough for KVM. VirtualBox is IMHO the simplest. ![]() |

I am running SuSE Thimbleweed, which is a development version, as a VBox guest on a Windows 8.1 PC. The PC was running Windows 10 when it crashed because of a bad RAM module. The only repair disk I has was made under Windows 8.1 so I reinstalled that. Funnily enough, when running Windows 10 it used to run only two BOINC CPU task plus one GPU task on its A10-6700 CPU, which is sold as four cores but the Windows Task Manager says it has two cores and 4 logical processsors. On Windows 8.1 it runs 4 CPU tasks, one GPU task on its GTX 1050 Ti board and the Linux Virtual Machine running Einstein@home CPU tasks. The Virtual Linux does not see the GTX 1050 Ti board and says it has a VMWare board, which does not esist. Tullio |

I can't find the post that said WoW could be played on Steam now. But it can be played if you add it manually to your library it seems. Hi Keith, Those instructions are for adding WoW to the Windows version of Steam, not Linux. Besides, since there is already a launcher for WoW, why add it to Steam in the first place? I don't need Steam now to launch WoW, or Star Trek Online for that matter. Ok, I see why, have one launcher for all, I get it. ;) So, those game prices on Steam, are those a monthly fee for using Steam to launch those games or something? I don't have to pay extra for launching WoW or STO. I've already paid for my games and I pay subscriptions to Blizzard for WoW, a 6 month deal. ;) STO is a life time subscription. I don't have to pay anything there. I just had a thought, this is kinda getting a bit off-topic. :( Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? End to surprise Windows 10 updates? New 'download and install now' option rolls out As Microsoft promised in early April, Windows 10 is gaining a new option that gives users better control over when its twice-yearly major feature updates are installed. |

The prices for Steam games can be free, subscription based or purchase direct. Depends on the game. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I'll probably get a chorus of gripe replies about security issues, but it's your computer so just ignore them. :^) Hi Mr. Kevvy, Have you, in fact, done this yourself? I changed it on Friday to disabled, uninstalled the POS update that keeps screwing things up and rebooted. It is re-installed yet again and set to reboot now. I went back into services and found that the setting has been changed. I changed it back to disabled, will reboot the PC, will uninstall the POS again, then reboot, again and wait to see what happens. I will post a results when I get them. Have a great day! :) Siran [edit] 1. disabled the service 2. rebooted after re-install of POS 3. uninstalled the POS again 4. rebooted to finish the uninstall 5. went back into services and saw that Windows Update is still disabled 6. waiting to see what happens next... Yes, and it stayed like that for months. Microsoft may have recently changed it to put itself back on again. Ah well. Hi Mr. Kevvy, I looked through the services list and cannot find anything about automatic updates. :( Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS?
