@AClementi : I joined after seeing this!! :)It's good to hear from people responsible for the June 4th-5th new users' surge (see the "New users per day" graph). Undoubtedly one of your good moves this year, Sir. Welcome to the SETI@home community ! @Simon : Someone should put together a gofundme for ads to pull in more peopleSpecial fundraising drives (such as this one back in december) provide optional episodic opportunities to contribute financially to SETI@home. Many people started private donation drives (for example, by pledging to give gained bitcoins to SETI@home), but it's not always easy or obvious to know if and when they indeed gave their accumulated cryptocurrencies to the project as promised. The safest way to help directly is through the donation page, which offers plenty alternatives and ways to help (ads are great for SETI@home, but there are needs that must take precedence - such as equipment upgrades and replacements, which are essential for the project to function properly at peak efficiency). This said, one of the best ways for the volunteers to help - something you are already generously doing - is by giving the project their unused computing cycles, without which nothing of this would be possible. -- I finally saw VICE's S06E08 15 minutes segment (available in Canada through HBO Canada / TMN.Go), and although it offers nothing really new to astrobiology and SETI enthusiasts who are already following developments in those fields, I loved the dynamic and positive spin on SETI and SETI@home of this introductory documentary. In particular, thanks to John (a SETI@home volunteer since its beginnings) I realized how powerful SETI@home was in reuniting around common goals people with so very different backgrounds (see him here in this VICE short), and Frank Drake's vision and perspective were, as always, uplifting. Hello, I'd like to contribute more to this project. Got a budget of $1000. What's the most worthy computer I can build or buy to help this project further? I'd like this computer to be a dedicated stand alone. Not looking to surf the web or play games on it. Not even send emails. All seti. Calculations, and what ever you need to do on it. |

GPUs are much more effective than CPUs. So I'd look at a decent GPU in the system. The GPU will require at least 1 full core. So at a minimum, you should have at least a duo core. RAM is expensive so that is going to be your second most expensive part of your system after the GPU. If you plan on building it yourself, you can use a program like https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ That will get you prices on all the different parts and get you an idea of how much it will cost. Most office desktop computer tend to have underpowered GPUs. Sometimes, you can't update the graphic cards because either the motherboard doesn't support it or the Power source doesn't have enough wattage. A better place to ask general questions is number crunching https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_forum.php?id=10 This is where most members hang out and you can ask questions and get quicker responses there. I'm confused as to why the Minister said the work units go out to three computers, and the host said it's 4 computers. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

Thanks for the heads up about this. It was a great episode, and was really interesting to hear them talk about SETI@home! I've been a proud member since 1999, and I'm glad to see it's still getting praise! |

I'm confused as to why the Minister said the work units go out to three computers, and the host said it's 4 computers. . . Because even with the best of intentions people can get things wrong ... . . And many thanks to whoever provided the daily motion link, it was interesting viewing. Stephen :) |

I suspect the mirror-image effect allows the current video to get around copyright protection somehow. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |
