Sorry. I meant CPU performance is less. being dual doesn't count against it at all. and Supermicro makes fine boards. i have like 5 of them. 2 being literally 10 years old. one is still crunching SETI, the other resigned to a NAS role. but it's not really fair to compare prices of proprietary server gear that has almost no market for resale, than a mainstream consumer desktop board which is what i was talking about. server boards also lack some features that someone might want, like audio. or even fitting in a normal case. but if you plan to just not bolt it in a case, and dont care about normal features, sure those oddball server boards would work. the real x79 boards are still very expensive. supply and demand. CPUs outlast motherboards in most cases, and there are less motherboards available as a result. the demand for x79 is still there so the price goes up. the fake x79 boards have some market only because the chinese are pumping them out cheaply and they "work". But many buyers are weary of the cheap build quality. and they don't perform at the same level for CPU performance. i have one of those boards. they work. but they are definitely some thrown together spare parts type boards. it worked fine for the small system it was running for a short while. but it has serious BIOS limitations, and CPU performance impacts. the biggest issue with my board is that even though there are 4 ram slots, and the CPU can run quad channel mem, the board will only do dual channel mem. the chinese baords are OK, people should just be aware of the limitations and not expect real x79 performance and features. This was the cheapest real x79 board I could find on eBay that wasn’t broken. I looked at a couple different brands and you’re looking at like 200-250+ for a decent x79 board. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F163219440287 Here’s a supermicro board of the same general variety C602 chipset, single socket, and a “normal†form factor. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F352443941202 Supermicro has lots of different models with lots of different PCIe configs. Thank you for the research. I wanted an "example" because I still wasn't quite certain I understood. I think I have grasped the idea. The question becomes budget vs. wants. And just how well the system I have working performs. It is possible that it will get up far enough into the stratosphere that I won't want to touch it :) Except maybe to add another gtx 1060 3GB :) Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

I have a case that has a usb 3.0 adaptor that plugs into the MB but a older MB without that plug in. That means all the USB ports on the front of the case don't work. Because this is a server MB it has a total 2 USB plugs on the back. I have looked at the adaptors on ebay but can't make heads or tails of which one I should be choosing? Yes I understand if I buy an external USB hub and hang it over the front, the technical issue goes away. Just wanted a slightly more elegant solution. Any ideas? Anyone know what has happened to the BOINC Dev forum? Clicking on my message board bookmark now brings up the home page. Clicking on several links brings up "The webpage cannot be found". |

There should be adapters for the front panel usb 3.0 plug to adapt to a usb 2.0 port on the motherboard. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AELPKM2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_jQwJBbF858BFD You’ll be limited to USB2.0 speeds, but the plugs on the front panel should at least work. If not you can also get a USB 3.0 add in PCIe card, and adapt the front panel connector to that to keep the usb 3.0 speeds Seti@Home classic workunits: 29,492 CPU time: 134,419 hours ![]() ![]() |

It looks like the link on the home page ha Needless to say as soon as I posted that the link on the home page was fixed.... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

It looks like the link on the home page has an extra "/dev" in it.I saw that (briefly) first thing this morning, but it's been working as normal all day. Unless Google (Chrome) is doing some smart caching somewhere? |

If you have an extra PCIe x1 slot, this will give you full USB 3.0 for the front panel https://www.amazon.com/Mailiya-Expansion-Connector-Controller-Internal/dp/B01LZWC7TL/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1535995949&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=pci+usb+3.0+card&psc=1 |

I have been wondering around on the leader board for top computers. If all else was held equal, why doesn't a high cpu core count MB with 4 Gtx 1080Ti's set on the top or near the top? Ignoring petri with that huge number of gpus almost all the rest are well below 32 or higher core machines. And the ones that are running 32 cores and 1080Ti's are not at the top of the list. Its almost like it is harder to get a gtx 1080Ti to crank harder in a high core MB when the CPU speed is at or below 3Ghz? I know its more complicated than that but just for the sake of discussion? :) Tom A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association). |

Petri only has 4 GPUs (1080, 1080, 1080Ti, Titan V) but he works the snot out of them :D Other people on the list like Zalster, is slowing down, resources allocated elsewhere. |

Most of Zalster's hosts are offline now after a power outage. He is at work and can't restart them until he gets off work. Petri only has four cards like the rest of us. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours ![]() ![]() A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

So that machine has been offline since Monday night. I'll reboot it on Friday afternoon and get it back up and running after I update the application. ![]() ![]() |

I also posted this in Questions and Messages where we have a small thread going on this topic. And one guy just about ready to start up on it. I just found this machine on the Leaderboard: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=8568434 When I just looked, the machine is at 27th. Ever since I started gpu crunching, I have shared resources among MilkyWay, Einstein and Seti. I added GPUGrid last year to shift my focus away from entirely astrophysical projects because I like what that project is doing in molecular simulations and my personal interest in new drug development being a diabetic who has tried or been on every drug they've invented so far to treat the disease.
