This just goes to show how a familiar(to me) item can be very mysterious to others.

Since there's no official name for this tool that I know of(I call it a book weight), the win goes to Carlos, as he came closest to it's function. PM on the way.

I was not thinking books. I use rubberized bean bags to hold down charts and plans. Holing open a book is different. But thank you for the win. Let's see who can figure this one out.

Not a potato flattener/chip maker. It could do that but so could your foot.
Yes it is a wooden clamp but that is only part of it. There are two pieces to this complex machine.
No not for furniture making nor dismantling it.
