Fun fact: The name Oumuamua is Hawaiian in origin from the word meaning "scout" (from ʻou, meaning "reach out for", and mua, with the reduplicated second mua for emphasis​, meaning "first, in advance of"), and reflects the nature of the object as a "scout" or "messenger" from the past.

It's interesting how the asteroid has this difference in light reflexion from the surface. I'd like to see more of that strange object... ;)

The main interest lies in that it is the first interstellar object detected from outside our Solar system. But I think we can pretty much rule out probes and spaceships. Be interesting to find out how long its orbit is and therefore when it has visited before and when it might visit again.

It is on a hyperbolic trajectory and won't return, ie. it isn't in orbit around our sun.

The SETI Institute used the Allen Telescope Array again, last night to monitor Oumuamua. They seem to think it at least as likely a source of intelligent signals as the exoplanets they normally scrutinize.

If you have any way of definitely knowing the true nature Oumuamua, or have evidence that what the SETI Institute is doing is pointless, could you please present it here? Thank you.

"Le Scienze" publishes the Italian translation of a "Scientific American" article which says that on December 13 Breakthrough Listen will use the Green Bank Radio telescope to monitor this object. But I wonder, what kind of radiations can it emit?

Dr. Andrew Siemion, head of the Berkeley SETI Research Center, and principal investigator for the Breakthrough Listen project writes that they will be looking mainly for narrow-band (artificial ) radio emissions. The Greenbank Telescope schedule mentions the frequency ranges of: ~ 1.5 through 2.6 and 3.85 through 10 GigaHertz.

They will monitor the object for 10 hours today, starting at 20 hours GMT. The Greenbank Telescope is reportedly sensitive enough to detect an omnidirectional signal of only one watt of power (about the same as a cell phone) at the current distance of Oumuamua.
