The science channel is making a big deal out of this. They are cool to watch but unfortunately I live about 300 miles south of the path the total eclipse will follow. I think my area will get between 50 and 75% totality.

Even so: to see the Penumbra racing along at very high speed will be an emotional realization for me I am sure.

I am still amazed that Columbus knew when an eclipse was about to take place.

I think seeing that phenomena will only be possible from the air. On the ground the event will happen at the speed of the sun crossing the sky.

I still remember the eclipse of 1961 because it coincided with the end of a love affair. There is a movie, I believe by Antonioni, which describes such a coincidence.

The sun is fixed. The Earth is rotating at 1000 miles per hour linear speed at the equator. At my latitude its about 600 miles per hour. If I could find a tall building here in Nashville, I might be able to see the darkness rolling in. I figure that the shadow is about 120 miles wide.

Back in the early 90's, I experienced a partial eclipse, and it was weird. I didn't know it was coming. I was just sitting outside on the courthouse steps where I worked, eating my lunch around noon on a clear and hot summer day, when the light outside started dimming , and the air became noticeably cooler. The dimming of the light was eerie because there wasn't a cloud in the sky, and birds started flying around like they do in the evening. Quite an interesting lunch. I'm really looking forward to this one coming up because I think Louisville, Kentucky is closer to the total path then it was last time.

Yes Gordon, I remember that event here in Nashville. It was around noon here as well and. I had a pinhole in a piece of cardboard projecting onto a sheet of white paper. I think that it got up to a 3/4 eclipse. Yes the light was quite different then. The total eclipse will be even more strange and exciting.

I went to the planetarium today to get some special glasses, and they told me this area should experience a 96% eclipse this time. I'm kind of leery of using the glasses. I just hope it doesn't rain!

In Stockholm there hasn't been a total solar eclipse since May 3 1715, and the next total eclipse in Stockholm does not occur until March 24, 2927 :(

Nashville TN area a prime location here.

Think of the two solar eclipses that Eddington pursued which ultimately proved Einstein's theory of General relativity.

I have read and printed the NYTimes article on the Eddington expedition. Many USA universities are going to repeat his observations.
