The sun is heading for a rare, super-chill period and we’re “not quite sure what the consequences of this will be,” scientists say.

THE sun is like a teenager that cycles through mood swings — from dramatic to chill and back again — roughly every eleven years. But this time it’s different. It now appears the sun is heading for a rare, super-chill period that threatens to add some unexpected drama to today’s climate change discussion.

Cheers.

Well, if those statistics predict the near future, I'm ok with it.

It would be hilarious if, in order to prevent extreme cold which would ruin food production, we end up having to pump more carbon in the atmosphere to prevent the big freeze.

Carbon dioxide, especially anthropogenic CO-2, is an insignificant cause of any effect on climate.

Very interesting; but, this goes against the determination by NOAA that the sun's output has been increasing. I too feel that the sun now is more intense than it was 50 years ago --but; I don't have any measurements to back this up.

If it is true, even if only for a couple of decades, with the world population growing as it is food production would be devastated like it was the last time (remember the Irish potato famine). We can withstand slight global warming as it enhances plant growth but a deep freeze could come close to wiping us out.

It won't work. The Republicans have built their ideology based on the belief that human-produced CO2 does not affect the climate. So we could not increase CO2 to combat the cooling.

We will freeze because the Republicans refuse to believe in Global Warming. It is certainly strange, but not exactly hilarious.

Did you believe in the Y2K impending disaster?
Did you believe in Paul Erlich's prognostications in "The Population Bomb"
Did you believe the CIA document of 40 years ago that said we would be out of oil by now
Do you believe in a Supreme Being and life ever after ?

Nah, I don't subscribe to your conspiracy hypothesis, which it will remain unless you can advance it to a theory.

Except Global Warming and Y2K weren't/aren't conspiracy theories.

True, but Bill didn't cite either.

Perhaps time to retract those spoken words, Wiggo, or possibly I knew what you meant to say?

In fact, only that of understanding our own sun is a quite important subject itself, or on its own.

In my opinion we should marvel at the wonders of the Universe, whether for good or for bad, since we probably know both these things.

I make of sunspots because they are dark and this because they are cooler than the rest of the surface.

Part of the sun's atmosphere is the corona and here it becomes the mixup in the naming which makes catching this slighly more difficult.

https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/sun-corona/en/

Also I remember from a while back the discussion about images from the sun being saturated by white flashes, which turned out to be quite strong radiation being present.

Here the sun apparently was in for a surprise, because such a behavior had not been seen before.

Really it should be better to pull the book from my shelf and have a read here, because here I probably missed out a little.

Also getting a sense that this has been mentioned before as well and this time by myself.

When I have been posting here, I also have made a point of that of Physics versus that of Chemistry and that much of the sun is perhaps the latter.

If it happens to be a difficult thing here on Earth, namely fusion, we still know that it happens in the core of the sun and also that I came in the wrong door.

Moral is then not to preach, but rather to teach, because with a heaven full of stars, we also could believe in possible angels, or even think of ourselves as being mad at times.

One of my better experiences in life is driving to a hill above town and next be able to locate the Crab nebula, M1, using a 2.4 inch telescope.

Already then I knew it was a supernova remnant and that the story behind this explosion, or perhaps event, was a quite dramatic one.

Today's knowledge about the events making up such an event happening, most likely is ending up in the books, because it is readily known and accepted stuff.

If you rather sit down and look at the fine print, some of these things are still esoteric stuff when it comes to the details.

So for those people choosing to make it a Court of sorts, meaning that of possible judgement, why not look at what is actually happening before making up your mind?

Not meant for Wiggo here, but rather the way we perhaps choose to do a couple of things, because most likely, there could be many things left unanswered and left for your mind.
