This one? https://github.com/UCBerkeleySETI/breakthroughI've read the README, but it doesn't seem to match the news description, and doesn't resolve the 404 sent to editors. In lieu of a webmaster, I've emailed Andrew Siemion and asked him to re-direct if necessary. |

There is another BL-related repo there https://github.com/UCBerkeleySETI/blml but honestly didn't explore it yet. Some interesting thing for tomorrow :) SETI apps news We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them. |

I'm informed that Steve Croft is a more appropriate reporting point if anyone else spots any more typos. |

Uggg.....People shouldn't be bringing that nonsense to anyone from SETI...I'm all for free speech as well but It's outrageous that they're blaming you for anything. |

I would agree to your post if the powers that be at Seti would stop sending political notices out through BOINC. This is the second time it has happened in less than a year and that is 3 times too many. . . The listing of all your rigs, past and present is not a problem that needs to be fixed. It is part of the "accounting" in that all contributor stats are preserved. That info is part of the process to calculate load and machine performance in executing the work being undertaken.. I know it can get "messy" when you add/modify rigs frequently over time, but that is why there is the "Show hosts active in the last 30 days" setting. So you only need to see the machines that are currently active. If you are selecting the "Show all" option then why are you complaining that you can see such a long list? . . And while I should not continue the controversy I cannot help but re-iterate that the original posting was not political, merely a statement of forum policies in a slightly light hearted vein with the intention, as I see it, of dissuading users from having dummy spits and abusing other people. Sadly it has clearly not been successful. Stephen :) |

It is a shame that Eric reports that SETI isn't really on the UCB radarIn my opinion I think he was referring to the fact that, if people getting hot under the collar about Seti matters report it to the Regents at UCB, it will be ignored. Seti to them is just one small project in just one lab on the Uni campus. It has a Director of Boinc and a Director of Seti to whom they delegate day to day management. . . Actually I think he was alluding to the fact that if he or DA went to the dean and made any kind of suggestion about the handling of the riots, he would be met with a "Who are you?" stare. . . Seti is not a project of "importance" on the managements radar ... :( . . Sadly ... Stephen :( |

Because it is an O/E issue. Pick one of those long dead machines in that list and click on the details link for it, now scroll down to the delete button. O/E issue solved. The delete button won't show if the RAC is above a minimum number that escapes me at the moment, but it is close to zero. If you care ask in Number Crunching. This is a BOINC project. Machines come and they go. Given the number of times I've upgraded/re-installed machines over the years I think I have credit for something like 30 active machines when in truth there are never more than 3 at any time. Perhaps instead of getting all politically worked up and sending out official announcements of such, those energies could be directed to cleaning such things up? I can't be the only one with machines I haven't had in years still listed as "active" in the Universe of BOINC can I?The listing of all your rigs, past and present is not a problem that needs to be fixed. Was passin through there myself, and as you were, making sure everyone's right to this that and most everything else was protected, I became exposed to folks who had a different opinion about how said rights be secured. "They" told me it was a "bunch of hippies from up there (up there?) at *Berkeley". Welcome home Sir Thomas. *That one took a few years to get straightened out in my tiny Brain Housing Group. (Marine, ya know...) So, as it goes, I thought everyone knew that SETI was kinda like that "white elephant in the room" that the ill-lustrous "Chancellor of this or that" kinda keeps their back turned towards, skirts conversations about, will go "Huh?" when SETI is mentioned by visitors who's ONLY reason they took the free tour was to find out about SETI......who's the step child now Chancellor ? Or Bill, John, whatever your real name is-everyone knows "Chancellor" is an alias. They still got that free tour don't they? BUT-and you always know that's coming-BUT, when ET come's rolling to the front door's, yeah, Berkeley all the sudden has a dept. called SETI@HOME. Kinda like Chicago all the sudden had a baseball team now huh? So, enough sarcasm, I'm using bandwidth better well spent crunchin than picking on those less fortunate, who will never know the satisfaction of crunching because they were to busy arguing the finer points of simple freedoms. Which brings me to a request, #3? Could "and/or embarrassment"be added without much lobby'ng? ;) For those who have never really thought about it much here's something to think about. All of the minds who have the same mindset, crunchin data looking for that spark out their, a genome, a number so long or big it's measured in "flops", we are an example to the other 99.huh% of the world. We, the .1% of the .1% of......I'm not sure how to enumerate those who crunch -vs-the entire rest of humanity, humane or not. Not understanding what we are doin, but were doin something. We certainly are doing something, crossing every line ever drawn in the sand there is from race to creed and all points in between, everyone has one goal. ET, CERN, prime numbers, malaria, we do that, whatever flavor, without ever rioting. I think it's a pretty cool world we, you and I, live in. That's doin something. I just hope SETI isn't spending any time or effort searching for intelligent life on the UC Berkeley campus. From what I've seen on the news lately, there probably isn't any. Just sayin'. |

I rarely come back to these forums, except Number Crunching to see what's going on when a problem occurs. I just spent 40 minutes reading this thread and I have to say it reinforces my decision to (mostly) stay away. The disruptive groups that are being discussed here have a right to free-speech unless it actually causes harm to others, just as the posters here and the lecturer at the center of these protests have. As for Eric posting his concerns about the use of these forums, well, these are his responsibility and he can set the rules, so I am not offended nor am I going to leave the project no matter how I or any of the posters feel about his handling of this situation. |

Eric, unlike Mark I never said anything wrong about you. Why do such a thing as looking for "Little Green Men" when you either could be hit by the feather from above, or perhaps think they could be in your head? The beer currently being consumed and also enjoyed is part of nature, as well as a couple of other things. Some things are there in order to please or satisy, while others are there to do the opposite thing. Possible people of fame could become victims of circumstance, including possible accidents and for this we should know about Princess Diana. In fact there should not be room for possible rhetoric when it comes to everything, but the possible story about extraterrestrials could be true and next not an official one. The Norwegian musical band A-ha is having a melody with the name "Cry Wolf" back from the old days. Rather than that of a possible "Cry", what about a possible smile instead, rather than that of a possible grin? Please tell me that I am perhaps Chuck Yeager rather than Bruce Macabbee and perhaps I could be able to believe in the story as well. Aladdin, like Marlin (except for possible name confusion) were both "Sorcerers", or perhaps that of Wizard could be an even better word and for this we also have the "Wizard of Oz". Again, should not be a confusion here when it comes to possible names. Rather the fact that astronomers could think, or perhaps believe that there are some 100-200 billion stars in the Milky Way alone and that the difference between Aldebaran and the Sun could be telling about the difference between a Type II civilization and next ourselves. Or is it not the fact that we are supposed to compare ourselves with someone else, perhaps even better off as well? What if you rather choose to be doing it the opposite way, as that above and by doing so, going the other way in order for the possible difference? Makes for a bit of comparison in any way, but at least in my thoughts. |

I support Eric Korpla's post , all the staff of SETI@home and all of the volunteers, it's amassing what they have accomplished with such little money and resources, SETI@home is the scientific experiment that most excites the imagination of people worldwide, I just want to help find ETI. Best Wishes to you all, --- Byron. |

May I suggest Delete the entire lot. The actions of the irresponsible that elected to use the campus as their war zone I no concern of SETI in any way. Get rid of it all and ignore it. It will die in the darkness where it belongs. Have used my CPU's and resources to do this work for a long time. While I do not agree with the methodology the machines still have something to do and who knows we might trip over something. The above said, I will return to the bliss of white noise analysis looking for the pink if it's there. Ed Never engage stupid people at their level, they then have the home court advantage..... |

Anybody should be able to have free speech on a government funded campus, even Satanists. Not that I would agree or attend. But schools are battle grounds for idea's. And the police need to start arresting people who riot. Peaceful protest is a right as well as free speech. The People who riot are the real problem. |

I've received the Berkeley Online newsletter with an article by the UC Berkeley Chancellor containing a link to a NYTimes article, and I begin to understand something about this discussion. I am totally with Eric Korpela. Tullio |

I rarely watch the news so wasn't aware of the strife happening at Berkley. But Grant (Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia) put it as simply as any Aussie ever could. Quote: Nutters from the Left and nutters from the Right are using Berkeley for their protests/riots. Apparently other nutters feel that the University should do something about it or they will stop crunching Seti work. All too silly for words really. End Quote. Couldn't help but laugh at your post Grant. Seems a perfect summary to me :-) Saved me 30 mins of wading thru news sites to find a balanced opinion on what was happening. I hope this junk all blows over quickly and we can get back to the important task of finding ET :-) Personally, I cant wait! |

Yes, the whole thing is perhaps supposed to tell about ourselves and not necesssarily any others. Enjoying both the show right now, as well as the weekend. |
