BOINC SCREEN SAVER IS NOW WORKING !!! but is was a "ROCKY" start-up....

This update does NOT show up in Windows Update in Settings; you have to download it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Make sure to download the correct version.

The download was quite large, at 532.8 MB and took a while. It is marked as KB4020102, and you select from the x86 version or the 64-bit; I have the latter Win 10. Then, several more minutes were req'd for it to install intelf. This was followed by a re-boot that took about 3 times as long as a normal re-boot.

Finally, after much time, my screen was back. I clicked on the screen and chose 'Personalize.' Then I chose the BOINC Screen Saver and clicked "Preview." I saw what I call the "noise box" pop-up. I then set my timer for 5 min, hit 'Apply,' and OK.

I waited the 5 minutes to SEE my new BOINC Screen Saver !! Yayayayayayay !!

Guess what ??

After 5 minutes the screen went dark and a smaller than normal BOINC icon popped up. Below it was the text "BOINC screensaver loading." Well, it proceeded to load, I thought? The BOINC icon slowly circled my 24 inch monitor screen with the icon flashing on and off HUNDREDS of times over the next 1/2 hour. BUT, there was no data, and no "noise box." :(

I moved my mouse to re-gain the screen. I re-checked my screen saver settings. All looked fine. Now what, I thought? Well, I've always been told that when you have a weird problem with Windows, REBOOT! I did.

After a normal start-up I sat back and waited again. FINALLY, the "noise box" filled my screen and cycled thru the "filling of the box with noise," over and over, for about 15 minutes. THEN, out of the blue, the OTHER 3 screens you should see, the data screens, cycled over and over for about 6 minutes, and THEN the "noise box" was back for about 12 minutes or so.

As of this point in time the BOINC Screen Saver is WORKING !! BUT, downloading it, installing it, and playing with it to make it run was an ordeal. Perhaps you will not experience what I did, or maybe it will be worse for you. How to know?

I am happy with it now, but I need a DRINK. A strong Margarita maybe? THANK YOU Bernie !! Wanna share? I have 2 straws. :)

I have NO clue as to WHY I had such a difficult time of getting the "new" BOINC to start? I published what I went thru here; I had to as it is true. The SECOND restart is what did the trick. Prior to it the new BOINC would not "load" and run as it was supposed to.

I'm VERY HAPPY that all those involved FIXED the BOINC Screen Saver. I realize that only a small percentage of SETI supporters USE it, and I think it sad. I run it for its "look" over a M$ screen saver AND because it is an attention getter. All visitors to my house, upon seeing it, marvel at it, and ASK about it. I cannot help but think that this benefits SETI in that new people sign up to offer their support. For this ONE reason, more SETI Users should use this valuable tool. My 2 cents. Deal with it. :)

NEW BOINC SCREEN SAVER HAS FAILED... :(

Hi All,

Sad to say, but after a rough "start-up," and then running FINE for about 14 hours, the NEW BOINC Screen Saver is again KAPUT.

All was fine earlier this morning, and I was AFK, but noticed, as I passed by, that BOINC was acting weird again, and doing the same bad thing it did when I first downloaded the "fix" and got it going.

I saw a smaller than normal sized BOINC icon with text below it reading "BOINC screensaver loading." It was again slowly circling my 24 inch monitor screen and slowly blinking on and off! :( I let it fo for about 15 minutes and hoped this was a temporary glitch. Finally, I moved my mouse to regain my screen and did the usual "Windows thing" that usually is a cure for all ailments, I RE-BOOTED. After a normal re-boot I sat back to watch. BOINC started up after the 5 minute delay I use, BUT all I see again is the smaller than normal BOINC icon slowly circling my screen. BOINC has FAILED. :(

What to do? I dunno? Pray? Hmmmmmmmmmm. Bernie? If you SEE this post, pass on the info if you can? I think M$ needs to replace BOINC Screen Saver Ver. 1.0 with a Ver. 1.1 ??

It's a sad day in Mudville. :(

Hi All,

In my last post I described how the BOINC Screen Saver had failed. :(

I left it run overnight, and it now is doing the usual, following thing: It displayed its now familiar, and smaller than normal-sized, BOINC icon with text below it reading "BOINC screensaver loading."

I have learned that a re-boot no longer restarts it, so, this AM, I tried something DIFFERENT.

All of the steps below may be 'overkill,' BUT how to know?

I right-clicked my Win 10 desktop and left-clicked on 'Personalize.' I then clicked on 'Lock Screen' and 'Screen Saver Settings.' I shut off BOINC by setting to 'None.' Clicked 'Apply' and 'OK' and exited.

After a few minutes I again entered the 'Settings' screen, selected BOINC and clicked 'Preview.' I then SAW the missing "noise box" as I call it, on-screen. I clicked on 'Apply' and 'OK' and exited.

The BOINC Screen Saver started working CORRECTLY again after my selected delay of 5 minutes. Yay Yay!

BUT, gess wat? It QUIT after about 20 minutes and I again got the BOINC icon with text below it reading "BOINC screensaver loading."

It NEVER finishes "loading." :(

I will keep trying, but, I remember from somewhere that "doing the same thing over and over after it has failed" is not too smart? Perhaps my lights are on but no one is home? Sad, huh?

Then when it finally restarts you get the (not so famous) BSOD with hex-code dump and informed to contact your nearest Automotive Dealer's help desk (repair shop) with the error code in order to have your vehicle towed so they can (attempt to) resolve the error message.

BOINC Screen Saver "Fixed" again ??

Maybe, too early to tell. An hour ago I rcv'd a cumulative up-date to Win 10 64-bit. It was Version 1703. I immediately enabled BOINC, and hit "Preview." On the first click all I saw was the "old" screen saver "loading" icon and message. I clicked "Preview" a 2nd time and the "noise box" popped on-screen. It has been working now for an hour, and it has re-started itself a few times when I interrupted it by using my PC.

Time will tell, huh?

Please find a safe spot to stop your car, so Windows can reboot to finalize installing new drivers for the sensor array of your turbo injector.

Then when it finally restarts you get the (not so famous) BSOD with hex-code dump and informed to contact your nearest Automotive Dealer's help desk (repair shop) with the error code in order to have your vehicle towed so they can (attempt to) resolve the error message.

UPDATED UPDATE to MS UPDATE

1 day abt 2 weeks ago, in bliss & tranquility, BOINC screensaver [SS] — or is it the SETI@HOME SS??? — was enjoying the 2017-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x86-based Systems (KB4020102). In the morning the "graphics", in full Rainbow, were perfect.

I returned from my sojourn that nite and my beloved - yes, useless, taking-up-space SS - were defunct. However, BOINC DID display "SS loading" without hiatus or respite. And the list of running tasks was truncated - amputated - to 1 where there had always been 4.

My post abt the "ever-loading" SS led me BACK to the link to install the "fix/update/fraud" aka 2017-05 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 for x86-based Systems (KB4020102) yet again.

LAST time it worked perfectly, until it manifested symptoms of no graphics anymore and was forever loading. I JUST finished attempting to DL the same "update" from the MS "catalog-update" in which even their use of English is a little unique.

After trying BOTH x86 and x64 versions, I was apprised NEITHER was appropriate for my system. I can only ASSUME having ALREADY DL an update, I no longer need it nor can re-install it.

Do u think we really DO have to wait for MS to "fix" the fix before we need another fix [as in recreational drug]????

And agn, will SUM ONE PLEASE elucidate the difference between BOINC SS and PROJECT SS, in the "settings" for the BOINC/SETI SS?, thank -u. NOW before I dissolve to my favorite computer athletics, viz., bashing the eminently bashable MS. I wish this WERE as easy to resolve as Multiple Sclerosis...

Yes, I went thru the same exact thing with BOINC weeks back; see my earlier posts on this topic?

Altho the BOINC ScreenSaver worked for a few hours after downloading the M$ "update," the nice "noise box" using the graphics screen QUIT after a few hours. Nothing I could do, and I tried everything, could bring it back. :( I see the "loading" msg below the smaller than normal BOINC image that rotates around my screen.

I am using BOINC, sans the "noise box" graphic, by putting a shortcut on my screen to boincscr in Win 10. I click it and it fills my screen and rotates thru 3 of the 4 pages, the 4th being the nice colorful "noise box" which never appears. You might try that?

There was only ONE response, I think, to my posts on this topic. It seems no one in this group, or others, really cares one way or the other if BOINC works or not. It is sad because I have brought new people to SETI because they saw MY BOINC ScreenSaver working as it should and wanted it on their PC's.

I don't know how to get it fixed. Win 10 has a screen where you can report problems to M$. I used it and detailed the problem fully. That was 2 weeks ago and no reply. I don't think they care either.

As I have said before, most of the people who post here do not run the screensaver as they want every computing cycle to crunch the data.

To them Boinc "works" just fine.

I currently have two machines crunching for SETI@Home one is a dedicated "cruncher" and is "headless"" ie, has no screen connected.

The other is my daily machine I am typing this on and if I am not using it the screen gets switched off.

The problem is that MS broke the screen saver and will really have to fix it, but I suspect it is pretty low down on their list of things to do. I wonder how many complaints they have actually had.

Boinc is no longer under active development as the funding was withdrawn some time ago and any updates or additions would have to be done by volunteers over at Boinc

Most major Windows updates also update your graphics drivers to Microsoft ones that while they work on a basic level lack some of the components needed for crunching work for SETI@Home

You seem to have mostly Nvidia GPU's so go to their website (nowhere else) and download the correct drivers for your particular GPU, once installed your GPU will no long show up as missing.

OH MY GOSH! Thank you so much Bernie! You are a genius with experience! No wonder my ave has been slipping since reloading OS! I made a copy to fix 3 computers!

Yes Bernie, all three SFF's are now running every task and other noticeable improvements have happened! I will be on the lookout for this reoccurring. Now if we could fix River Song's issue all would be right with the world again! So little makes me happy with eight electrodes in my left brain and feeling like I have been freshly hit by a baseball bat in the right side of my head. YOU MADE MY DAY!

I wish that were the case. :) I prefer NVIDEA over all other graphics cards, BUT, my Win 10 Home, which is 2 months old, and has the M$ Creators Edition, does NOT have an NVIDEA; it uses an AMD.

There is documentation about what older version AMD drivers will let you run the current AMD/ATI video/gpu "cards" (works on discrete as well as integrated) for Boinc/Seti. If you can't find it PM me and I will see if I can.

Hi Tom,

Sad to say, but I know nothing about screen saver "drivers." I only installed one once on my Win 7 that has an NVIDEA, but am clueless about how to do that with an AMD. :( Any help from you on how to make my AMD work properly with BOINC wud be much appreciated !
