Inside Science) -- Lasers mounted on robot spacecraft or giant satellites could deflect asteroids away from Earth, suggest new orbital simulations exploring this defense strategy. An impact from a comet or asteroid about 10 kilometers wide likely caused the most recent and familiar mass extinction that ended the Age of Dinosaurs about 65 million years ago. Such giant impacts are rare, but smaller strikes can still wreak major havoc. "Lasers can be used to propel small probes to relativistic speeds, in what may be the only feasible way to get to the nearest stars," Lubin said. That part is intriguing. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

where does the massive amounts of energy come from to power the Laser ?? |

where does the massive amounts of energy come from to power the Laser ?? That always seems to be the common problem with many futuristic concepts. It can be done but only with massive amounts of power that in the foreseeable future can't be achieved. First we got to find them before we can try moving them A few nukes will nudge any big ones away I'm shore the U.S and China , Russia have more than enough to do the job And if not no Laser is gona do diddly squat to any comet or meteor we can't use nukes to nudge it away with . |

First we got to find them before we can try moving them the MOST stupid idea is to nuke it: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3135279/Nasa-use-NUKES-defend-Earth-asteroids-Agency-teams-nuclear-experts-develop-space-bombs.html Much wiser idea is to use laser! Why? Vaporizing one part of comet will make geyser of material...so it's just like having a rocket engine nudge from 1 side of comet! & did I mention you don't have to go billion km to do it?! Just settle the laser somewhere in orbit or Lagrange point... ;) non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

First we got to find them before we can try moving them & also, it gets complicated...'cause in reaches beyond Earth, some Asteroids which don't get enough sunlight will be solid & cold...& you can use lasers which we have for drilling objects, heating them to produce jets of hot substance (whatever they are made of, 'cause it gets weird from one Asteroid to another)... but what if you need to cool it down?! why cool it down?! well it come Asteroid gets a tail from movement to the Sun, if you cool it on one side -> other side will propel it sideways...making it shift orbit & miss Earth... how to do that? also, lasers: http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/energy/a20217/laser-cooling-explainer-video/ ;) non-profit org. ufos zap them for us, or else we would have been blown many times over long ago. don't believe me? check the records of rocks that just go missing. |
