Making it a roundabout, with a substantial centre, would be better than speed bumps.

Yes, cut down buildings to install that roundabout. Only solution roadblocks on one of the directions.

First, a disclaimer - I know that junction and have seen first hand how much contempt the users of the "minor" road have for the signs; I was stopped waiting for a couple of tankers to come past on the main road when an idiot was to impatient to wait and nearly got himself crushed by the first one, idiot shouted at me for stopping, then at the tanker driver for not stopping, then at the cop in the car behind the tankers.......
There's actually enough "waste" land on that junction to divert the roads slightly and put a roundabout in - knowing how "fast" the local highways people do this sort of job the two or three years of roadworks (mostly one man picking his nose all day) and the idiots would get used to slowing down to get through the sea of cones and other barriers.

Now for some truly terrifying numbers ...
https://cdllife.com/2024/inspectors-placed-23-of-commercial-vehicles-out-of-service-during-72-hour-roadcheck-blitz/
Inspectors placed 23% of commercial vehicles out-of-service during 72 hour Roadcheck blitz
During the 72 hour inspection effort, CMV enforcement personnel conducted a total of 48,761 inspections.
Inspectors uncovered a total of 13,567 vehicle, 2,714 driver and 163 hazardous materials/dangerous goods (HM/DG) out-of-service violations.

Yes, that is right 1 in 4 HGV's shouldn't be on the road.

What's really worrying is the top three vehicle defects.
Defective brakes, tyre issues, other brake issues made up 64% of the reasons for declaring them defective.

Oh, and for the drivers getting pinged- 25.4% didn't actually hold a Commercial Drivers' Licence (drivers were only 4.8% of the those 25% of vehicles that shouldn't have been on the road, but still...).

Appears to be "pilot error" that lead to the crash...
Houston helicopter crash: 'Multiple fatalities' reported
An NTSB investigation into a deadly helicopter crash in east Houston is now underway, according to authorities.

The Houston Fire Department says the helicopter hit a radio tower in the Second Ward shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday night.

The R44 helicopter was carrying the four people and is believed to have taken off from Ellington Field, according to officials.

One of the people on board was a child, according to Houston Police. The identities and age range of the individuals on board have not been released. However, officials said on Monday, that the families of the victims have been notified.

During a news conference on Monday afternoon, Lt. Jonathan French with the Houston Police Department Vehicular Crimes Division said there were multiple reports of debris being discovered due to the crash.

The norm would be one train parks there, and the other passes. The fundamental question is, why that didn't happen last night?
He said a new digital system to stop trains might be to blame, or leaves on the line, given the steep incline at the location of the crash.
It'll be some time, but the RAIB report will be interesting.

A tram derails and plows into a shop in the Norwegian capital but only 4 are lightly injured

OSLO, Norway (AP) — A tram derailed in downtown Oslo and plowed into a phone and computer shop on Tuesday, Norwegian police said, but the accident only left four people lightly injured.
There were about 20 people on the commuter train when it derailed off the tracks at an intersection on Storgata, one of the Norwegian capital’s main thoroughfares close to Oslo’s main train station.
Witness Mohnsin Munir told Norwegian media that he saw the tram coming at high speed. It was supposed to make a left turn but derailed and continued straight ahead and into the shop.
Police said that the tram driver is considered a suspect in the case. The driver was not identified.
Images from the scene show that most of the first carriage of the tram had slammed into the shop. Police and the fire department said the crash had caused extensive damage in the shop.

A quick and early analysis of that Welsh train crash. Not yet the final verdict, of course, but there are are enough new facts in there to get your teeth into.

Train safety system failed before fatal crash, report says

Sanding has long been a source of failure, especially now many trains have very small pipes & orifice for the sand to flow down. Said "holes" don't take much to block them up, and it's not unknown for them to get blocked up while the train is in service.

Oh what a melted mess, the smoke was probably toxic from the plastic. I assume everyone got out ok, at least I hope they did.

Not new, but if that was me crossing the street, I'd hurry up and buy a lottery ticket!

Some people can be lucky.

Incredible moment motorcyclist flips on top of car after crashing into it.

A motorcyclist has found himself on top of a car in a brutal collision caught on a dashcam.

The terrifying moment occurred when the rider sped through traffic and collided with an SUV that tried to abruptly switch lanes.

Within a split second, the motorcyclist went from the back of his bike to sitting on top of the black Holden he collided with........
