That'll need fixing again. Footage has captured the moment a Qantas plane ripped up part of a runway at a major airport during take-off. A Qantas plane tore up part of a runway during takeoff on Sunday at Perth Airport – prompting urgent repair work. |

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/c70w8w5lw6jo Officer climbs into moving vehicle to help driver Officer climbs into moving vehicle to help driver Traffic cameras captured the moment an officer from the Macomb County Sheriff's Department in Michigan jumped into a moving vehicle to help the driver. The driver was experiencing a medical emergency when deputies were dispatched, according to the Sheriff's Department. Once Deputy Nicole Miron got inside the vehicle, she was able to stop it. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham commended the officer for her response. “Due to her quick thinking and selfless actions, she safely ended what could have been a tragic situation," Wickersham said. The driver was transported to an area hospital for further medical care. Old enough to know better(but)still young enough not to care |

Not as hard as you want. And possibly not stolen by those involved - they used to pop up on auction sites with boring regularity. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

A crash test performed on a guardrail on October 12, 2023 highlighted the concern. At 60 mph, the 7,000-plus-pound, 2022 Rivian R1T truck tore through the barrier with little reduction in speed. In a separate test conducted in September 2023, a 2018 Tesla Model 3 sedan lifted the guardrail and passed below it, coming to rest behind the barrier.Oouch... large inertial masses; resp. a mid-sized car with a low silhouette but also a very low center of gravity meets road safety equipment of the 20th century. Guard rails are supposed to detach from the ground anchor and deform in order to absorb impact energy. But 'lifted'? When were guard rails developed and standardized... 1960s? Surprising findings. I still haven't heard of such research or tests with BEVs being carried out in my country. |

My EV battery weighs 474lbs in the 2015-2016 Spark EV, the 2014 LFP version weighs 560lbs. |

There is a weight mass and placement difference with BEV vehicles. Those batteries are not light. The Rivian truck at over 3 metric tons at 60 mph. The majority of the vehicle weigh at guardrail height. The guardrail didn’t stand a chance of properly doing its intended job. |

Surely guard rails on mixed-use roads would be designed to handle accidents involving trucks ("Heavy Goods Vehicles") travelling at speed, too? They probably wouldn't be able to stop a runaway completely, but they should contain as much of the kinetic energy as possible, and guide the vehicle back onto its own side of a divided highway - trying to minimise the risk of a crossover and head-on collision? |

In the video of the Rivian truck ploughing through the lightweight guardrail. It had no noticeable effect on it. This style of guardrail is much more effective on much lighter vehicles. Now the K-rail that took the head on collision and proudly stopped it is in use as a guardrail in many areas. |

Interesting that the F350 Super Duty is about the same weight, but nobody is complaining about them..... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The 2014 Spark EV weighs 2967.42lbs, the 2015-16 Spark EV weighs 2866.01lbs, the 2019 Bolt EV weighs 3582.51lbs. |

I agree that a lot of heavy vehicles are on the roadways. So with increased weight and speeds. The type of guardrail must be more robust. Interesting that the F350 Super Duty is about the same weight, but nobody is complaining about them..... The F350 is a petrol fueled vehicle. So it usually passes under the radar. How about the large lorry vehicles in the U.K. ? How much debate do they stir up? |

How about the large lorry vehicles in the U.K. ? How much debate do they stir up?Not as much, since they aren't used as a daily driver for doing the shopping, picking up the kids from school, heading to the coast or the mountains for a weekend away, visiting friends, etc. That's what those of us outside of the US can't wrap our heads around- why, instead of using a car, would you use a heavy commercial vehicle as a car? (although things are getting ridiculous here with the number of people buying Landcruiser's and other large heavy 4WD vehicles & SUVs instead of a car, even though it's not used for work, towing or even going on a dirt or gravel road let alone off road...) There was a Rivian pickup truck review on youtube recently, seems the bottom carbon fiber skid plate which protects more than just the EV battery can get the exposed mounting bolts bent, insurance companies have said cause of a lack of knowledge that the trucks are 100% writeoffs, even though the bolts are just to mount a skid plate, Rich Rebuilds says the battery wasn't damaged, just 2 bolts that the insurance company missed, the insurance company saw rust around 2 other mounting bolts and assumed the Rivian was damaged beyond repair, many body shops assume this too, IMI approved Repair Shops won't assume. Look for Throwaway Cars on youtube and watch the video, he's good, he bought a dead Fisker Ocean EV for $10,000 and repaired it and it runs perfectly and with no factory help, most impressive. |

A F-350 is a work truck. Some even get outfitted as a ambulance. A lot are sold without a bed and are fitted with whatever specialized bed is needed for the job. A F-250 is a daily driver for some. |

How about the large lorry vehicles in the U.K. ? How much debate do they stir up? The amount of debate depends on where they are. Not many complain about the 44 tonner trundling along a motorway, but if the same vehicle heads into some posh housing estate to deliver Mrs.Fortigue-Smythe's new swimming pool then....
