Here Government will sometimes(depends on who the government is) will pay for such alterations, one transportation project that I know of, is relocating underground utilities and such, just to be safe.

Funny safety measures, derails train? What if it had passengers?

From the photo, the incident should have been survivable to any passengers. Train is upright, coach volumes intact, no objects penetrating occupied areas. The alternative might have been to allow the train to drive on into annother occupied train, or an occupied platform, or into structure that would penetrate the coaches. De-railing is probably the lesser of many evils.

The REAL way to prevent this accident is to not drive through red lights.

Took a bit to find out what HGV was.
Here we have Light Ridged (LR), Medium Ridged (MR) & Heavy Ridged (HR) truck licenses, then come those for Semi trailers (Heavy Combination, HC), and the many and varied form of multiple trailer vehicles (Mulit-Combination, MC) for road trains. The pinnacle is driving the Road Trains with triple trailers hauling fuel.

IMHO, it depends.
If they are part of learning how to drive, before you even have a licence, and then maybe a course or 2 just before you get your licence then maybe a reminder 3 months later then I can see them being of benefit.

But for someone that's been driving for 18 months, 5 years, 15 years- nope. No effect at all.
Like a druggy- unless the driver themselves admit that they have a problem, nothing you do will change their behaviour. Why should they? They're the best driver on the planet, there's no need for them to change.

I think it would have to be over 20 years ago now there was a production (BBC I think) looking at the history of car safely.
One thing they did was call any incidents crashes, as calling them an accident tends to imply it was unavoidable, something that just happened. While a land slide or falling rocks taking you out on the road can be truly unavoidable, the vast majority of crashes are preventable. They pretty much boil down to stupidity (my terminology).

And one of the most interesting points made towards the end of the show, was that as car safety has improved greatly over the years (suspension, tyres, roads, car strength, ability to absorb impact etc) people's driving has become less cautious, more aggressive/reckless. The safer roads & cars become, the less care people take while driving, so

making something idiot proof really does result in a better idiot.

Hmm, I wonder if it was the same one I watched. There was a segment of the program where the reporter was interviewing a Thames Valley Police Officer.

That officer's reply to a question was: -

"There is no such thing as an accident, it is all down to a lapse of concentration"

At the time & even now, I fully agree with that.

Edit: To confirm that there was a nice "event" on the way to Addenbrookes last Friday. For the first time in approx. 18 months she drove at very high speed & not a worry by me until we came off the A1 onto the A14 slip road.

I was in the back seat keeping my granddaughter company when I looked up...

"Whoa, drop back darling".

Being seated on the the left hand side, I could see the traffic in front of the HGV that we were behind. Traffic had started braking sharply & she was way way too close to the rear of the truck.

Phew, close call. Another lesson learned by her, but in those 18 months compared to that very 1st trip down, she learned considerably.

Having dinner later that evening, all I told her was that on other trips, "please, no more whoa moments" :-)

Perhaps they explains why in the heavy Latino (as Drumpf would say illegal) area in Los Angeles they drive with caution, no license, no insurance, no registration.
