It's becoming trendy around here to raise chickens in the backyard, but I'll stick with the grocery for my eggs.

Trendy or poor?

Actually trendy. It's the uber-hip urban thing to do. I have friends who do it, but spending all that time and money on raising 3 or 4 hens for some eggs and making some sort of statement is not my cup of tea.

I like watching Stephen Raichlen's grilling shows, and he made this, which none of us should be having, but it sure looks good...

It is trendy in our urban neighborhood as well. I don't mind hearing roosters in the morning. The nearest one is down the street a bit, so not nearly as annoying as our neighbor's dogs who want to tear me to bits every time I take out the trash.

I've found that fresh eggs at the Farmer's Market are not always as "fresh" as I'd like them to be. Sometimes they are excellent, and sometimes they are stale with some rotten "surprises".

I can easily go through a couple of dozen eggs in a week when I'm on a baking frenzy. An angel food cake takes a dozen whites. The yolks can go into sponge cake rounds, which I bake and freeze to be frosted later when I need a quick homemade dessert. If I make a couple of Italian tortas (sort of like a crustless vegetable quiche) that's another six to eight eggs per application. Bake a lemon pie and that's another 4 eggs. Make Salad Nicoise and I'm hard boiling more eggs. Before you know it, the cartons are all empty.

They make good boats in the bath tub!

@Angela
I seem to be in luck. My local grocery store stocks "Fruit Cake" fruits. I can get them fancy and chopped up together or each whole and separate.

A few of my neighbors have hens, as well. I wouldn't be able to leave the
hens alone in the back yard in some small enclosure. It's just not how I
am with animals.

Plus, your raccoons would do everything in their power to eat your chickens. You would have to put the chickens in a "raccoon proof" enclosure every night.

Lucky you! They are more seasonal in our area. I did find one small independent grocery store that still had candied fruits, but I'm pretty sure they were the fruits that didn't sell last holiday season. Not that shelf life matters that much with candied fruits though...

Indeed. This is why my neighbor trapped most of the neighborhood raccoons
and let Animal Control take them to a safe place and release them. This is
what happened to my favorite raccoon - the one that was becoming very
comfortable with me around and that can be seen in my YouTube video(s).

I miss that fuzzy creature.

There are two or three rabbits that are out in the yard eating the greenery. They have a personal space of about 10 feet now. They are still watching you ready to run. Not sure how much more their personal space will shrink. But they are not bolting the moment they see you.

White Russian Ice Cream

INGREDIENTS

YIELD 1 quart UNITS US
1cup whole milk
1⁄2cup sugar
1pinch salt
5 large egg yolks, beaten
2cups heavy cream, chilled
2tablespoons coffee liqueur, chilled
2tablespoons vodka, chilled

DIRECTIONS
In a small saucepan, cook the milk, sugar and salt over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves, about 4 minutes (do not let the milk boil).
Slowly pour one-half of the hot milk mixture into the eggs, whisking. Pour the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring and scraping with a heatproof spatula, until thick enough to coat the spatula, 8 to 10 minutes.
Strain the mixture into a metal bowl. Stir in the heavy cream. Refrigerate until cool, about 2 hours.
Stir the coffee liqueur and vodka into the ice cream base.
Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Find a recipe for pasta all’amatriciana.
It only contains 6 ingredients guanciale, pecorino cheese, chili, pepper, white wine and tomatoes.

NO onions

Enjoy and donate $/£/Euro 1 to the Red Cross in support of the relief in Amatrice Italy and the surrounding area.

Wow, that sounds so good I think I would like a taste.
Also it sounds like something one may wish to keep away
from the kids eh?
