I live in fear that I'll wake up and
find that the Irish have attacked us
in the night.

We don't attack, we just leave little gifts...

With all the Irish and Scots whose descendants live in the Maritime Provinces, I suspect it is well past the point of worry - unless you are Quebequois (sp?)

Ever heard of synthetic saffire watch crystals used on better quality wrist watches.

I think you are slightly out of date there my friend.

In the past artificial sapphires and rubies were both used in mechanical watches, with the best quality being termed "21 jewels" and the cheaper "9 Jewels". But the numbers game started to be played hence ISO1112 to stop misleading advertising

In modern watches, the timekeeper is a quartz crystal in an electronic circuit, so accuracy of timekeeping is not dependent on low friction of the mechanical parts, and jewels are not used much any more.

p.s. My Uncle was a Watchmaker & Jeweler.

A gold pocket watch, (that I traded a large pink Tourmaline crystal for), of mine that I had serviced last year was determined to have a couple of small rubies in it to keep time. Unfortunately, the watch isn't 100% accurate. It seems to run about 5 min. fast. (It was serviced for its main spring; which broke. $250.00)

My 2012 model Rolex Milgaus is a modern mechanical watch with 31 jewels but the safire chrystal I was refering to is the scratch resistant glass on the watch face although technically it is not glass it is artificial saffire.
if you find a Rolex with quarts movement send it to me immmediately. There are hundreds of modern mechanical watches currently being manufactured, mostly swiss luxury brands and plenty of Japanese ones as well.I have 3. I also have a Tissot mechanical movement chronograph divers watch that has jewels (not sure how many) but they are rubies which can bee seen through the saffire crystal case back window. The front glass is also saffire crystal. It is a Seastar automatic model waterproof to 30 Bar or 1000 feet.

edit- 15 jewels it was written on the rotor but so small I couldnt see it without a magnifing glass and torch.

Ah, I see you meant the face cover, my mistake.

The cover of a watch's face, known as the crystal, is designed to protect the dial. There are three main types of crystal found in watches: acrylic, mineral and sapphire.

Acrylic crystal is an inexpensive plastic that does not prevent scratches, but allows scratches to be buffed out.

Mineral crystal is glass, which is composed of several elements that aid in resisting scratches (it is seven times harder than acrylic crystal). It is generally found on more expensive watches.

Sapphire crystal is the cover of choice for premium watches. It is the most expensive type of crystal and is three times harder than mineral crystal. It is made of an extremely durable synthetic material that makes it shatterproof and scratch resistant (not scratchproof). Some have a non-reflective film to prevent glare.

I have an old clock about 100 years old that belonged to my great grandfather.
Specially made for him with the engraving "Kronometer Gustav Frich".

Sounds really interesting although I'm not really into old clocks.

I fear for the survival of our species.

Peace on earth.

Never fear, I predict that after the
species gets through the next choke
point, the next kind of humans may
do things better.....

Erwin Sattler of Munich

I wanted to build one these precision clocks but couldn't come at the AU$8,000 price tag. Also my house vibrates from traffic so there is nowhere suitable to put one so it would function correctly. I was very tempted though so to have a reference clock for setting all my watches accurately.

I love the old grandfathers, especially those Westminster chimes

I've always wanted a grandfather clock. There was a children's show called Capt. Kangaroo, and one of the "characters" was called Grandfather Clock.

While we're on the subject of watches... I wear my dad's. It's a self-winding watch, and shows day and date. Love analogue time pieces.

And didn't that clock always go 'cookoo, cookoo'? I could swear it did, but then its been a long time since then.

You know... I actually don't remember.

I've come to like my digital Casio G-shock watches with day, date, month, pm indicator, utc time to help with the timezone confusion on these boards and alarms to remind me to watch Charmed and Jag and timers for cooking.

In North America we get clock updates via radio from the US NIST reference clock in Colorado. Like Chris, I have one radio set clock in the house, and set all the others off of it.
