Normally I am not a spelling stickler, but in this case I entirely agree.

Actually and honestly I am, always have been. Had it drummed into me at skool from age 11 that correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar was a basic prerequisite to use the English language properly. We had excellent essays marked down because of sloppy English. Mind you that was in the days when that sort of thing mattered, sadly that is no longer the case. Too many modernistic educationalists got into the act and said the important thing was to be able to communicate, the technical niceties didn't matter any more.

Strangely enough, it was learning computer programming that made me an accurate speller and typist. Back in mainframe days, when there was a several-hour turnround for student jobs on the university's one-and-only computer, you quickly learned not to leave out the comma or semicolon that caused compilation to fail with a syntax error. And using the wrong function name - even if you spell it right - is even worse.

This was probably made by someone who isn't quite fluent in English, that's My guess. If I'm wrong, so be it.

Yep you'd be about right Vic, and applies across the board to 90% of the general public in the UK, at least in my opinion.

He knew that Mark, that was his attempt at reverse oneupmanship that didn't work :-))

I did not know that. You posted serious comments, so I take it that you're part of the 90%?

You've constantly run down most of the citizens in this country for a long time, ever stopped to think that others may portray you in the same manner?

I might have said "correct spelling, punctuation and grammar WERE basic prerequisites to using the English language properly..." (But I hate to be a stickler.)

I am only a stickler when writing legal documents. Otherwise, I believe in creative spelling. Like William Shakespeare who spelled his name in more than 80 different ways, ranging from “Shappere” to “Shaxberd.” In the handful of signatures that have survived, the Bard never spelled his own name “William Shakespeare,” using variations or abbreviations such as “Willm Shakp,” “Willm Shakspere” and “William Shakspeare” instead.

Now then, I fear that we are getting into the realms of objective and subjunctive clauses here, which always was (was always?) my Achilles heel.

Are we? I was seeing it as merely a case of having multiple nouns and therefore needing to use the plural verb.

An interesting and genuinely disturbing map, Carlos.

In 2013 I would believe it to be quite plausible and I fear minimal change if that question were asked today.

Given recent cyber attacks back and forth, I would expect the flag of China to be draped over the USA in 2015, instead of the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

And given the current situation in Greece, I would expect to temporarily see a German flag over that country right now, instead of the stars and stripes... at least until the current economic crises there is sporting a new band-aid.

I would expect to see lots of Russian flags popping up now in former Soviet states.

I fear for the survival of our species.

Peace on earth.

Nice. Blue earth and yellow sun:)

As you say lots of Russian flags are popping up now in former Soviet states on Carlo's map.
And the Scandinavian countries.
