FDA expands list of recalled dog food; 9 brands pulled for making dogs violently ill
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has expanded its recall of dog food brands that have too much vitamin D, which could make your pet sick.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but very high amounts can cause serious health problems like kidney failure or death.

The recalled products were sold nationwide, and the FDA says the list of recalled products could continue to grow.

Pet owners report dog deaths from recalled food on social media

Hill's Pet Nutrition is facing the wrath of dog owners who say their pets became ill or died after eating canned food recalled nationwide for elevated levels of vitamin D that can poison a pooch. Yet the company's late January recall is one of many for other dog food brands for the same reason in the last nine weeks.

Dogs’ Eyes Have Changed Since Humans Befriended Them

Two specialized muscles give them a range of expression that wolves eyes’ lack.

Dogs, more so than almost any other domesticated species, are desperate for human eye contact. When raised around people, they begin fighting for our attention when they’re as young as four weeks old. It’s hard for most people to resist a petulant flash of puppy-dog eyes—and according to a new study, that pull on the heartstrings might be exactly why dogs can give us those looks at all.

A paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dogs’ faces are structured for complex expression in a way that wolves’ aren’t, thanks to a special pair of muscles framing their eyes. These muscles are responsible for that “adopt me” look that dogs can pull by raising their inner eyebrows. It’s the first biological evidence scientists have found that domesticated dogs might have evolved a specialized ability used expressly to communicate better with humans.

Animals at Some Texas Shelters Respond to Various Languages

Dogs don't "speak" a language in the same way that humans process them

Spanish. Vietnamese. French. German. Hungarian, even.

The Houston Chronicle reports while the list may sound like options for an online language learning program, animal shelters and dog trainers in the greater Houston area have said they've encountered pets that respond to commands in these languages.

The Harris County Animal Shelter sees a "diversity in pets" and the languages the animals respond to reflect the diversity of Harris County, said Kerry McKeel, a spokesperson for the shelter. A 2015 analysis of Census data found that 145 different languages are spoken in Houston.

"Just from observing interactions in our lobby, we can guess the animals understand Spanish, and I'm sure there are other languages that (our) pets understand," McKeel said.

... Staff members do not currently have time to retrain the animals in English, McKeel said, so the shelter would likely encourage new pet owners to seek out private trainers for their animals to learn commands in English.

Haha, I am from Houston and yes my dog understands Spanish as well as English. Picked him up from a shelter and they mentioned that he was with a Hispanic family for some time (he had a very weird story...beaten badly,) was supposed to be a dalmatian/retriever mix, however....after I realized it, Dalmatian's spots are on their hair, this dogs spots are on his skin! After talking to a few people, the shelter most likely knowingly marked him as anything besides pit-bull mix due to the fact they would have to put them down. But he is definitely pit bull. Here is a picture of him after I got him a few years ago. I will post a recent one soon, hes currently outside relaxing on the patio.
