How long do you think it will take M$ to just start rewriting all this stuff back in with every update? I said that same thing to my friend when he ran O&O's software. I told him "of course, obviously, there's no guarantee that MS won't just release an update next week that turns all of those things back on automatically, or changes the way they are controlled so that the current known methods to disable them no longer work." May not be Skynet edition related, but I noticed tonight at work every single computer at one point had a notification window saying that the computer had to be rebooted to complete a rollback of KB3069392... Something corporate did not like or was broken when released by Skynet. If I recall, all the computers at the fire truck factory are on 7. Simply posting a bit of info relating to the ineptness of $S.... I have no interest nor stake in whether 10 dies the death it should. I am not going near it. By the time I have to find another OS to replace it on the crunchers, either the Seti quest might have been fulfilled, or abandoned. And since my earthly demise might just go hand in hand with the death of Windows....not worried one bit. Just sayin'...meow. Jumped on the Windows 10 bandwagon and installed the product. Ran great for exactly one week. Logged on one morning and found that I had lost functionality of the "start icon, search icon, taskbar and action center icon". Thought I was crazy so did a reboot. When Windows 10 came up, same thing. Got onto the Microsoft Support Forum and low and behold, I'm not the only person having this problem. Strange thing is, the other individuals who reported this problem, where using the preview release of Windows 10. I'm using the full-blown free, wonderful Windows 10 downloaded by Microsoft to my machine. Continued reading through the reported problems and finally got to a group of people who also allowed Microsoft to download and install the full update. They were having the same problem that I was. Ran through all the "hacks" that were provided, which of course didn't work. Have been playing with Windows 10 for the last 4 days trying to get it to work properly. At 02:30 Central Time in the United States, for sh*ts and giggles I clicked on the Action Icon. Its entire panel open and worked properly. Clicked on the start menu and it worked. Did the same for the other icons in the taskbar and they worked. Here's the kicker. I hadn't done anything to the machine for over an hour. I guess the Microsoft Fairy looked up my address, flew in from Redmond, Washington and fixed my machine while I was having a beer in the kitchen. Checked the Action panel to see if any downloads had come through while I was away from the machine and they hadn't. I'm seriously considering switching to Linux if this install of Windows 10 goes south again. I've never spent 4 days getting a piece of software to function properly. |

Windows 10 has the habit of shutting me out. When I relogin I must restart my BOINC projects and the CERN Summer Challenge, which is not a BOINC projects but uses Virtual Box. I also cannot use RDP which worked on Windows 8.1. Tullio |

For those that are more interested in information than ranting & raving, this article on Win10 will probably be of interest. Greetings Grant, I may be the exception to your rule about 'ranting and raving'. ;) For all the good that I saw in Windows 10, I could not get past their privacy policy. Windows 10 is the biggest piece of malware to ever hit the Internet. I do not need an operating system that SPIES on me, stealing data from me and above all stealing any PASSWORDS I 'may' have stored on my PC. And one other thing of importance to me: I tried to download a piece of software while using Win10. This software was freeware, I don't remember offhand what it was. When I clicked the download button I was taken to a Micro$oft server to download it. I was required to log into any Micro$oft account I 'might' have just to download a piece of freeware software. I refuse to have any kind of account with Micro$oft. I was able to find an alternate download site. No, Windows 10 is not for the masses if they want to protect their privacy. My privacy and what I do in it is NONE of Micro$oft's business. That article only says that Windows 10 is better at doing what Windows 8 and 8.1 could not do. Windows 10 is NOT better than Win7; I will remain with Win7 Pro 64bit for the duration. Keep on BOINCing...! :) CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. LoL, nice M$ approach: "So, you like Win7&8 for better privacy? Well, we'll kill privacy there too then you will accept Win10!" OMG, I predicted that.. .but not for Win7 !!! Another thing that's out of your control is that the operating system ignores any lines you may have added to the HOSTS file, so you cannot block the IP addresses of those servers in the usual way. They are hardcoded into system files and cannot be turned off easily. 2-sides external firewall is nessecity these days. |

Hi, Seems Nvidia have released a hotfix driver for Win10 to sort out memory hogging under Win10.. may only apply to SLI config's.. Apparently AMD are also having similar problems.. For anyone using win10 pro, and having disabled driver updates it probably wont be needed. Anyways yet another problem with M$'s new OS.. LoL, nice M$ approach: "So, you like Win7&8 for better privacy? Well, we'll kill privacy there too then you will accept Win10!" Yep, I posted something similar a few days ago; ...are you aware M$ can change the EULA for Windows 7 Anytime they desire? Yes, read the current Windows 7 EULA, they can do whatever they wish and they have demonstrated what they wish with Windows 10. So, don't be surprised to wake up one morning and find the Windows 7 EULA has been 'modified'. It wouldn't surprise me one bit. Just wait, soon M$ will probably force you to allow then to Scan/Record/Report your Personal Files in 7 & 8. What, you thought you could out M$ MS? |

because os's crash it is always wish to install the os on 1 drive and every thing you might want to recover on 1 or more others. i have been running the evaluation copy of 10 for several months now and as far as i can see the lilo multi os loader and the registry involving licensing seem to be very sensitive but other than that windows 10 runs robustly and smoothly and i have found solutions to any driver or install problems i have had with the exception of very old games. i have crashed 10 a couple of time requiring reload thought both times were my fault so win 10 like all of its predecessors fixes so problem causes so more and generally move thing on. unix works well to it just takes a lot more hands on while setting up. as to machines that are only running seti the less you load the faster it will run so a minimum install of something like linux mint could work well. |

One major problem with the "Free" upgrade offer is that it removes the transferability of the license. The license is tied to the device. So for enthusiasts like me who gradually refreshes the system Windows 10 upgrade is a no-go. Once you upgrade the motherboard you need to buy a new license. I could be interested in a upgrade license offer that involves a transferable license (between devices), that was the case with the predecessor Windows 8. Additionally the disadvantages: - global advertising ID - use of Live ID as account - Windows store that mandates the above. By comparison the Windows Update is nicer for desktops. - EDGE browser that cant be removed. High time for EU commission to step up and reapply the free browser of choice option. - associated spy/clutter ware in conjunction with above. Firefox with AD Block + and Ghostery is the norm. |

I guess, my previous thoughts still apply. Most of us are very computer savvy, and know how to do things others don't. What concerns me the most is that we may be the last generation to fully understand what privacy means. We can delay the information collection for a few years at best. Then what. The children of today already carry smart phones, which collect much more information than Win 10 does. Microsoft is just getting on the band wagon with every other company. It had to in order to stay profitable for the long term. There are still OS's like Linux, which will remain under user control for the foreseeable future, but what happens in 5 years, 10 tears, 50 years? I am using Win 10, and am slowly turning on functionality, knowing full well that my smart phone collects way more than Microsoft does now. I am really concerned about the future. Of course most of us have the skills to stop the data heading out, but the masses don't. Even we can only maintain it for a limited amount of time. I do have a positive comment about Win 10. It is an easy learning curve, and works similar to Win 7. When they switched from XP to Vista, the whole directory tree changed. That was a pain, except for the most robust user. At least for the new Win 10, that is much the same as Win 7. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |

Sorry, the kitties have advised me not to touch it. Too much bloat, too much intrusiveness that has to be turned off just to make it safe to use. Kitties are usually correct in their judging of such things. I am not going near 10. "Time is simply the mechanism that keeps everything from happening all at once." |
