Amazon has merchants with Win7 Pro SP1 64 and 32 bit OS available still with COA included @ $66.00 US ea. OK - Long story short: Dad's HP laptop fan quit, BIOS states can't boot, need new fan. This is the second time we've had this happen. So, instead of paying $139 for another new fan, we bought a new laptop. It came with Win 8, I just got through Upgrading to 8.1. 8.1 smoothed out the performance of the machine, which was pathetic on 8... Zombu gave me a link to the Media Creation Tool for Win 10; used it, told it to upgrade system now, it said it Downloaded 10, (I don't know where), verified said Download and then promptly exited... No start of Win 10 installer. Repeated process, and same result!!! How do I find the Downloaded Win 10 and get it to install??? TL TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Why would you want to if 8.1 smoothed out the performance of the laptop? You ought to think that with all the extra surveillance crud, 10 would be a menace for that laptop. Because dad hates computers and tech to begin with, the Tile system of 8 SUCKS, and is too difficult for him... I want 10 to restore the proper desktop functionality and allow him to be able to use the Start button in 10 to turn off the computer when he's finished using it. Just found the installer for 10 hidden and tucked away buried deep in some folders that were created with Unclear Text as to what the Folders and files were for... VERY BAD FORM... NOT AMUSED!!!! Win 10 installed perfectly. It informed me that it was the Home Version. (8 and 8.1 NEVER said what version they were.) So, we Upgraded 10 Home to 10 Pro for $99. It just finished the Upgrade. :-) All I have left to do for the new laptop is install MS Office Home and Business 2013. System seems to remain as smooth as it was on 8.1. This makes me happy; because, then my dad will be happy. It seems pretty simple to navigate around. I took care of ALL the privacy stuff mentioned here in this Thread. How long do you think it will take M$ to just start rewriting all this stuff back in with every update? It almost looks like one of those social experiments where they wait and watch what happens to learn what to do. ...

How long do you think it will take M$ to just start rewriting all this stuff back in with every update? Greetings J, Would Micro$oft actually be able to legally do that? It would seem to me that if they change users settings to what they want, contrary to what the user wants, would tend to start alienating users away from Windows. Actually, I think I had read here that they are doing that now, to some extent. I just cannot see that Micro$oft would actually take over users PCs by changing the settings. The latest fallout is something that Microsoft probably won't be too upset about: some private BitTorrent trackers that trade entirely in pirated media appear to have banned the use of Microsoft's operating system. How long do you think it will take M$ to just start rewriting all this stuff back in with every update? The game can be played both ways. Most of what Snowden released was already suspected by many. I've suspected Windows 8 since I installed it, therefore, I only place items on there I want them to see. I even go so far as to print veteranstoday articles as PDFs and place them in Windows 8.1, just so they will read them. *snicker* I can imagine what my file must contain... ID: 1717959 · |

Also creepy, and of course not what you wanted to read, but knew it was coming. Even when told not to, Windows 10 just can’t stop talking to Microsoft. Windows 10 uses the Internet a lot to support many of its features. The operating system also sports numerous knobs to twiddle that are supposed to disable most of these features and the potentially privacy-compromising connections that go with them. Unfortunately for privacy advocates, these controls don't appear to be sufficient to completely prevent the operating system from going online and communicating with Microsoft's servers. For example, even with Cortana and searching the Web from the Start menu disabled, opening Start and typing will send a request to www.bing.com to request a file called threshold.appcache which appears to contain some Cortana information, even though Cortana is disabled. The request for this file appears to contain a random machine ID that persists across reboots. Some of the traffic is obviously harmless. On connecting to a new network, Windows machines try to request two URLs (www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt and ipv6.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt, the former over IPv4, the latter over IPv6) to ascertain whether a given network is routed to the Internet and if there is a captive portal in the way (NCSI stands for "Network Connection Status Indicator"). These requests are very bare, with no machine IDs or other data sent. If you want to turn even these off there is a way to do so, but the privacy impact is minimal. Some of the traffic looks harmless but feels like it shouldn't be happening. For example, even with no Live tiles pinned to Start (and hence no obvious need to poll for new tile data), Windows 10 seems to download new tile info from MSN's network from time to time, using unencrypted HTTP to do so. While again the requests contain no identifying information, it's not clear why they're occurring at all, given that they have no corresponding tile. Other traffic looks a little more troublesome. Windows 10 will periodically send data to a Microsoft server named ssw.live.com. This server seems to be used for OneDrive and some other Microsoft services. Windows 10 seems to transmit information to the server even when OneDrive is disabled and logins are using a local account that isn't connected to a Microsoft Account. The exact nature of the information being sent isn't clear—it appears to be referencing telemetry settings—and again, it's not clear why any data is being sent at all. We disabled telemetry on our test machine using group policies. And finally, some traffic seems quite impenetrable. We configured our test virtual machine to use an HTTP and HTTPS proxy (both as a user-level proxy and a system-wide proxy) so that we could more easily monitor its traffic, but Windows 10 seems to make requests to a content delivery network that bypass the proxy. We've asked Microsoft if there is any way to disable this additional communication or information about what its purpose is. We were told "As part of delivering Windows 10 as a service, updates may be delivered to provide ongoing new features to Bing search, such as new visual layouts, styles and search code. No query or search usage data is sent to Microsoft, in accordance with the customer's chosen privacy settings. This also applies to searching offline for items such as apps, files and settings on the device." This is consistent with what we saw (there is no query or search data transmitted), but also likely to run counter to most people's expectations; if Web searching and Cortana are disabled, we suspect that the inference that most people would make is that searching the Start menu wouldn't hit the Internet at all. But it does. The traffic could be innocuous, but the inclusion of a machine ID gives it a suspicious appearance. ID: 1717960 · |
