... I would say that DOS 6.22 was better than DOS 6.1, and that DOS 5 was probably the best OS that M$ has ever made. Note this little twist to the tale: Unacceptably Ridiculous MS made fake error messages in order to derail DR-DOS. It was documented in the anti-trust trial with MS internal emails. MS is exactly what it apears to be. A ruthless company that only pays homage to public image and profit rather than ethics. Here's what they did... To my view, that certainly ain't for the good of the computer users... IT is what we allow it to be... local setiathome_v7 7.03 (opencl_ati_cat132) seems to be running OK on my Radeon graphic board after the monster Windows 10 update. It's the first GPU task I see running. Tullio |

... I would say that DOS 6.22 was better than DOS 6.1, and that DOS 5 was probably the best OS that M$ has ever made. The one piece of context that was left out of that person's post was the fact that there were problems running a then-beta version of Windows on top of DR DOS, so Microsoft wanted to make sure that the beta only ran on top of MS-DOS, because that is all they were willing to test it on at the time. The code that refused to allow the final version of Windows had the DR DOS code 'remarked' out - meaning the code was still there but not usable at all. Because this code was still there, it didn't look good for Microsoft, so they chose to settle with Digital Research out of court. From your link to the emails: Andy Hill emailed David Cole, Windows group manager: "Janine has brought up some good questions on how we handle the error messages that the users will get if they aren't using MS-DOS. The beta testers will ask questions. How should the techs respond: Ignorance, the truth, other? This will no doubt raise a stir on Compuserve. We should either be proactive and post something up there now, or have a response already constructed so we can flash it up there as soon as the issue arises so we can nip it in the bud before we have a typical CIS snow-ball mutiny." Emphasis mine. |

I know since the 80's that M$ is the devil and should not be supported what so ever Just wait till next year when M$ holds your machines with your free upgrades hostage and forces you to a subscription I came down with a bad case of i don't give a crap |

I have tried the GPU tasks I can use on my PC. SETI@home 7.03 worked fast on both the onboard graphic on my HP PC and a Radeon graphic board. Einstein@home crunching Parkes data sees only the onboard graphics and is slower. All BOINC projects using Virtual Box work well, but the CERN Summer Challenge, not a BOINC project, hasn't started yet. The GUI is not much different from 8.1 but that is probably because of HP apps such as Quick Start. Tullio |

What you mean nothing has convinced you ..... You get your own advertising ID and microsoft will change your privacy settings for you .. I mean that is just amazing 1st the OS will give you personalized ads for free from the information they stole from your computer and then to make sure you look at these great ads and they will turn everything back on you turned off to make sure you always informed If that is not great then i dunno what you want I actually plugged in 3 cameras 5 microphones and a gps to make sure they are always up to date and know what i am doing Seriously ^^^^^^^^ <<<<Advertising ID you should have been sold by just reading that I came down with a bad case of i don't give a crap |

I know since the 80's that M$ is the devil and should not be supported what so ever It's perfectly fine if you don't like Microsoft. I've only been fighting for facts in this thread because disinformation and FUD tend to rule the roost whenever something new comes out. So to that point, if you have any factual information that Microsoft will renege on their previous statements that they are not going to a subscription based model for those that received the free upgrade, I'd love to hear it. |

I know since the 80's that M$ is the devil and should not be supported what so ever https://redmondmag.com/articles/2015/04/01/subscription-model.aspx The link is to an article which on the face of it makes sense. Besides, would a subscription be so bad? $20 a year for a constantly evolving OS instead of the screaming and howling each time a new version is released, sounds fair to me. As for the snooping MS is said to be doing, I have adjusted all of the settings that were suggested in various, NUMEROUS, articles and I have had no problems. In fact, the targeted advertising hasn't changed at all, Facebook, Google, MSN, they all have the same ads they ever did. Yes, some of them are obviously targeted, THEY HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS! So, think about that. Is MS spying on you or have they ALWAYS been spying on you. Pay attention people. Personally, I have no problems with Windows 10, and the latest CCC from AMD works just fine and my PC is humming along quite satisfactorily... Peace people and good crunching... |

I know since the 80's that M$ is the devil and should not be supported what so ever I'm well aware of the fact that Microsoft has been toying with the idea of a subscription based model for Windows 10. ;-) I even think there's a potential market for a subscription based version of Windows, similar to Office 365, that some people would be willing to pay for. However, the comments made suggest Microsoft is doing a bait-and-switch tactic in that they are only offering a free upgrade so that later they can force money out of people. They are actively encouraging people to not upgrade to Windows 10 based upon this false information. We don't need more FUD. It would help if we could stick to the facts instead of opinions. Agreed. I've also talked with some people who's opinion is that they know they're going to get advertisements for products no matter what, so if they are to get them, they may as well be targeted toward their interests. Ironically enough, I consider myself an advocate for personal privacy, and yet I haven't turned off any of the privacy options in Windows 10. Do I implicitly trust Microsoft with my personal data? No more then I do Google or any other company out to make a profit off my information. Yet I'm not so worried about it either. Personally, I have no problems with Windows 10, and the latest CCC from AMD works just fine and my PC is humming along quite satisfactorily... Same here. Would you believe I upgraded my girlfriend's sister's desktop to Windows 10 and her major complaint is that "there are two lines now". After physically going over to her house to find out what she meant - she was referring to the fact that she now has two columns of icons on her desktop. o.O Not quite sure how that one is Windows 10's fault. I know for a fact there were two columns worth of icons on her desktop on Windows 7 when last I worked on it, a fact she clearly hadn't noticed using her own machine! (Doesn't help that some of her background images obscured the icons somewhat.) The point I'm illustrating? That once again, people hate change. |

I just received this email from a friend in Albuquerque, she is unhappy with the privacy issue and decided to roll back to Win 8.1. Helppppppppp I can’t uninstall Windows 10. It tells me that I can’t return to 8.1 until I have my computer plugged in, that it can’t be running on battery. Well, after numerous times of checking to be CERTAIN every possible electric connection was shoved as far as possible and then having Dean shove them also, it continued giving the same DAMN message. Any clues from your group? I hate 10, it also states that you can only get rid of 10 for the 1st month after that apparently you’re screwed, of course it looks like Microsoft is doing it’s best to screw you after less than a week! Any suggestions would be appreciated. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Thats quite true, but most don`t care a little bit about security. Win 10 is still based on the Vista kernel, so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new ? With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

To move forward with plans on unification of all devices. An OS is more than the kernel these days. I see several Linux distros releasing new product without new kernels. |

so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new It makes older software incompatible, that you have to buy new software. |

so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new But it hasn't. I can (and am) run software designed for Windows 98 on my Windows 10 system. The obvious exception are disk utilities, but other than that, I haven't been required to buy new software just because of an OS. |

so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new My SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition stopped running when I upgraded the OS - I can't remember whether that was XP to Vista (doubt it, based on the timings), or Vista to Win 7. |

so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new Did you conclusively figure out why? Or did you leave it at correlation is causation? Just curious. Sometimes patches are necessary to make it work. Or compatibility shims. |

so what sense is in it to release a new OS if nothing except the design is really new I've still got it loaded, but it's years since I tried to do any serious database work (pre-retirement) - Access 2003 is still my preferred quick hack tool. From memory, the Developer GUI (Query Analyser and suchlike) continued to work normally, but I got lots of scary warnings that the database server couldn't be run under the new OS. I had a running Windows 2000 Server at the time, so I was able to keep development and storage separate but network-linked (which sounds like the best way of working anyway). |

Don't forget that when every new OS comes out the 3rd party hardware vendors will not always compile and issue new drivers for older kit to save themselves money. That forces you to buy new kit. I have a very good scanner that also does 35mm film and slides with an attachment. But no drivers for win 7 so now useless. I had that problem about 8 years ago when my old Win98 machine started to fail and my new box came with Vista. Not only did I very quickly learn to hate Vista just for itself, I found that Vista had no drivers for my Epson printer, Epson scanner, and ScanMaker 5, all of which I really liked using. Both Epson and Microtek simply refused to come up with new drivers. Eventually I scrounged an old IBM Aptiva from the resale shop at a local landfill (for $5, I think) and just transferred the HD from the old Win98 box to the Aptiva. It still sits right here next to my desk and gets fired up whenever I want to do any serious scanning. |

I like my HP DesignJet 600 E/A0 36-inch plotter. For the LaserJet 4000 and 8100, I have to just use Windows Update to search for drivers for those, but the DesignJet 600 doesn't have drivers available. If you go to the HP website, they say "Oh, win 7 64-bit? lol.. just use windows update, you'll be fine." Tried that, doesn't work. Ended up doing a lot of web-crawling and found the download page for the 600 on a wayback machine, and found the download link for the 2000 Server 64-bit drivers. Clicked the link to download the files... and they are still on the HP servers, just not hyperlinked from anywhere today. So I was able to get the 64-bit drivers for my ancient plotter, even though they are not signed drivers, they work anyway. I keep that 3MB zip on two different flash drives, and a raid-5 array, and bi-weekly BD-RE DL backups. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |
