I've used IE since v6 & until that MS update crap earlier this year, had no issues with IE. Only reason why I use Firefox is because some sites, even though I can view the sites, will not log me in. Other than that, no issues.

Like everything, it's all down to choice.

Just uninstall, and hide the following updates, and you'll never be bothered again (until they push another upgrade update on you):

KB 3035583 - According to Microsoft, this update enables "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available".
KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".
KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.
KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.
KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.
KB 2990214 - Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.
KB 3022345 - Update to enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows (Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1)

Personally, I have hidden that particular update six times now, but it keeps coming back as an available update, because MS keeps "fixing" it, which changes the unique hash identifier for it, even though the KB number is still the same, so it comes back as a "new" available update. Here's the explanation from InfoWorld about that one.

I have both of my win7 machines set to "check for updates, let me choose what to download and install." I also use WSUS and try to decline the updates related to the 10 upgrade, but sometimes, there are just so many updates that I miss a few, so I have a second fail-safe on the individual machines, and when I see a list of what updates are available, I google all the KB numbers, looking to see what they actually do. MS just says stuff like "fixes a number of small issues for better reliability" and that's the extent of their information about what an update does, but then it turns out that it does almost nothing of the sort and instead, runs basically a keylogger and data-mining to report back to HQ how you use your computer, and there's no way to turn that off, other than to never install it in the first place. That's the other reason I always wait a week or so to install updates: to give it time for other people to find problems so that I can avoid those problems.

Thanks very much for that tidbit. I just knew that update sounded familiar, yet because it showed an August 4th release date, it had me puzzled. That's why I just made a note of it, until I could get around to checking it out further. I don't think I ever understood why some vaguely familiar updates occasionally seemed to reappear. Your explanation of the "hash identifier" component has me going, "Ah, ha...so that's it!"

@ all was anyone still using IE? I switched to Firefox 3 years ago due to all the inter-connectivity occurring every time IE was open. Slowed everything down on my systems.

Sadly, because IE was the standard for so many years and many companies wrote all sorts of intranet sites or custom ActiveX controls for IE, most companies I've worked in the role of IT Support only officially support IE but allow users to use whatever browser they choose.

Personally, I mostly use IE after having spent some time using Firefox then switching to Chrome (and a very brief stint with Opera). I'm currently using Edge and so far ... it's a browser. Meh.

I use IE at times to watch videos (from news sites mostly) that refuse to work in Pale Moon or Firefox. Apparently IE is capable of playing the most obscure video formats without extra plugins and add-ons.

I am not a Windows fan, I have two Linux boxes running SuSE Linux, often updated but it asks me if I accept the updates. But, having bought a HP minitower, I found Windows 8 64-bit installed on it, soon updated to 8.1. I am running Virtual Box on it in order to run the CERN projects which need Virtual Box. Now it was updated to Windows 10 home edition, and all CERN projects restarted after some minor glitches. I am not a Facebook, Google, Twitter or Live user and my Thunderbird mailbox is on both Linux boxes, so I think I have nothing to fear.

I haven't had much time lately, so I didn't force the update. Last night it downloaded on it's own, and if I don't have to work tomorrow, I'll give it a go. I'll start with the upgrade, create an ISO, then do a clean install. If i do have to work tomorrow, it will have to wait another week.

I appreciate all the information from everyone's input to this thread. I know far more about Win 10, that I have known about any new OS prior to installing it.

One neat feature of Windows 10, I think the only one I have found so far, is that it does track the internet usage of apps for you. I can see BOINC has used ~1.9GB & what's this... why had the "photos" app used 150MB? It's a work machine in my lab with no photos on it, using a local account, & I haven't touched it in a few days. So that's annoying.

When installing Windows 10 the system opens up a LOT of connections to other companies with ads.
Your computer system will lag a lot!
What I found out was that you have to change the privacy settings to off.
There are many of them but when I set them to off the lags disappered.

The major issue that I'm seeing is this: - An operating system should be just that. All users should be able to make their own choice as to what programs/apps they install on their computers.

So, we have a "Cumulative Update for Windows 10: August 5, 2015", comprising 3915 files and 1,802,903,011 bytes.

In other words, Service Pack 0.01 is out.

My Windows 10 PC rebooted last night and I found all projects using VirtualBox powered off. I took the occasion to update my VBox from 4.3.12 to 4.3.30 and all VBox projects have restarted, save the CERN Summer Challenge which is not a BOINC project. On the Virtual Box site I learned that VBox 5.0 is not yet working on Windows 10, that is the reason I installed 4.3.30.
