PS I have decided to throw caution to the wind and do all 4 of my Win 7 machines.

One 6 year old Dell laptop, my daily driver and cruncher, one machine used for TV video and one old slow HP machine I only use to read the news.

I will let you know how it goes.

PPS. An update, my laptop and daily machine have the new notification the other two still have the old one.

I had a failed installation of Netgear WNA3100 N300 wireless drivers, Intel Management Engine Interface a couple of times, then two failed Installations of Win 10 home, on my i7-2600K host,
and on my i5-3210M host, just the failed installations of Win 10 home, didn't attempt the driver updates,
The driver updates no longer show on either host, and the "Get Windows 10" icon says it's validating Windows 10 for my particular PC's, and they are working with their partners to make sure windows 10 is ready for my particular PC's.

I hear Linux Mint is nice.

i'm in the process of converting two windows 10 enterprise x 64 10.00.10240.00 machines back to windows 8.1
i never really had a problem with all updates being automatically installed until a few days ago when microsoft's newest video driver update overwrote amd's latest drivers from three weeks ago. so catalyst control center doesn't open anymore. it's not critical on my dual-gpu machine, but on my quad-gpu machine the microsoft driver turned on crossfire on two gpus and i would normally use ccc to turn that off. msi afterburner can tweak just about every other setting except crossfire. so under windows 10 all the updates were coming all of the time, i could only chose automatic or scheduled reboot. it's not like windows 7/8.1 where there are critical updates that i always install and an optional section where hardware drivers usually reside so i can skip those if i need to.
maybe this only applies to computers with multiple amd gpus and that every one using intel/nvidia would be just peachy, i wouldn't wish this problem on anyone

If you read the link is seems that Windows 10 installs a newer Nvidia driver than the Nivida Gforce Experince is aware of so it immediately tried to downgrade the driver.

So how did MS have an Nvidia driver that Nvidia didn't know about!!

Seems it may well have been Nvidia who dropped the ball there.

Also anyone in the know will have not have Geforce Experience install anyway.

Apparently it was fixed at the weekend anyway.

If you do the Express, do know that you allow:
- Cortana, the personal assistant, will send all typed and spoken text back to Microsoft so "Windows 10 gets to know you". It will also send your address book to Microsoft, without asking anyone in it if they want that. Cortana isn't available in all languages yet, but it's got these options turned on by default.
- Windows 10 will send every page you look at on the internet back to Microsoft for a security scan with SmartScreen.
- Windows 10 allows everyone in your friends list to easily share wifi passwords stored on your computer. Friends of theirs will share these as well. Friends of those... yep.
- Each program or app is allowed to read your unique advertisement-ID.
- Edge will send you personalized advertisements.
- Your location will be stored at all times and automatically shared with programs and apps that ask for it.
- All programs you install will immediately identify you by name and photo when logged in with a Microsoft/Hotmail/Live/Outlook account.

And then there are a lot more settings that send stuff back to Microsoft. All will be turned on by default, even if you turned them off in a previous (beta) install, or Windows 8/8.1 installation.

Gotta wonder if you really want Win10? And they're complaining about Android being nosy? Yeah, right. But this is probably why kit's free, the majority of people do not know about these settings and use the express installation. Instant revenue increase.

Works OK for me. Put it on my XP machine at home when it lost its HDD; the AthlonX2 that handled 32-bit XP OK wasn't up to 64-bit Linux, so I swapped in an i7 motherboard & CPU. I think part of the problem getting used to it was the Cinnamon display manager, it's a bit top-heavy. I put Mint on an old Atom netbook, using Mate rather than Cinnamon and that seems to work well, though I haven't tried to do much with it.

Mint is nice only problem i had so far with it in years is that the old repos disapear after a while so you have to upgrade to newest version

You can go to the Microsoft website, and download a special app that will give you control over driver downloads. This was just made available yesterday as far as I can tell, in response to Nvidia complaints. Unfortunately, it isn't yet a part of Windows 10, but it is available. You can uninstall a driver, put what you want in, and as long as you keep the Windows driver hidden on the downloaded app, it won't re-install itself.
I do not have the link available at the moment, so it will require a search.

Ok, my old laptop will not run Win10, ATI Radeon Xpress Series video 'card' is the problem. I have no clue whether it is a card or is integrated. I tried to find a newer driver, but none were found. Win7 says the driver is up-to-date. Go figure... :/

After reading your post, I am 99% reluctant to upgrade to win10 on this PC. My new keyboard is already sending my info to Razer. Luckily I can turn off the connection to their cloud and have my keyboard still function. I don't need nor want Windows doing the same thing. It is NONE of Microsoft's business how I use or where I use my PC or what I use my PC for. They are NOT Big Brother. It has me wondering now just how much information Microsoft gathers from users that goes to the user's respective government.

I do believe I will be staying with my Windows 7 Pro 64bit OS for the duration. Perhaps Grumpy Swede is correct in what he says, despite the way he says it. ;)

So this was interesting, I noticed there was an outstanding update on my laptop, so I installed it, just in case it was "required".

I then checked on the othe 3 machines just in case there were any outstanding updates. On my TV/Video machine the "Update" was Windows 10 is ready to install.

So I did, it actually had to download it first then "prepare" it then after you had agreed to sell your soul to MS (The EULA), the first thing it did was reboot, after which I got this.



Sorry it's only a photo of my TV but not sure how to take a screenshot with no OS!!

That was 15 minutes ago and has now reached the lofty heights of 3%

Strange, but I thought that hysteria over the device driver updates that popped up over the weekend was debunked fairly quickly. I found a couple references to already existing "Device Installation Settings" in Win 10, either from System Properties, Computer Properties, or Devices and Printers. I don't have Win 10 yet on any of my boxes, but here's a couple screen shots that I saw a few days ago.

I haven't played with Win 10 at all yet, and I am not planning to do so for a bit and then only after making an image of my current system drive. I do have a couple of questions though for those that are familiar with the manual install.

Has anyone found that if you do the "Manual Installation" does it allow you to turn off all of the above privacy settings?

Are there any privacy setting that cannot be turned off or that users are not even made aware of when doing a manual installation?

I can fully understand the reluctance to upgrade straight away also the belief that doing so will be making a pact with Satan.

However I have several reasons for needing to know how Win 10 works.

Most important is my work at the local 60+ club where I teach IT to, well people over 60!!

I have already had people there ask me if they should upgrade to Windows 10 and I know whether I say wait or not someone will and I will need to know how to sort it out.

Also over the years I have got tired of "boring" why be like everyone else, why not "live on the edge" I have 3 Vista machines that can do my crunching for me, whilst I will be more adventurous and make a deal with the devil.

I will post anything important I discover here so as to be of at least some help if it all goes wrong and my computers are left in smoking piles.

Whatever happens I plan to enjoy the experience!

This is absolutely correct. This option, to install or not Device Drivers, is available in both the pro and home versions. (I am running both versions and the option is there is both)
