I am a Linux user but since having bought a HP PC last year with Windows 8, soon updated to 8.1, I find Windows 8.1 very reliable. I am running 4 BOINC projects on it, two of them use VirtualBox. So when Windows 10 arrives I don't think I shall have any problem.

i've been testing BOINC on Win10 4 last 6months...everything works OK! ;)

Where is the advantage?

If you are a registered Insider and run the current build 10130 with your MS-account, you should get the final version for free even without running W7 or 8.1. At least that's what many german tech sites claim since yesterday. Could be interresting for ppl that still run XP.

Micorosft orginally posted "users would receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated.". Then they promptly removed the "and remain activated" portion & added a disclaimer that only Windows 7 or 8.1 license owners would get Windows 10 for free when it arrives on July 29th

Why would Microsoft provide a crunching-specific advantage? You may as well ask if Windows 10 will improve the gas mileage on your car, then decline to upgrade if it doesn't.

I imagine some older programs wont work on win 10 anymore like it is on win 8.1.
So i`ll mabe update my win 8.1 install but certainly not win 7.

Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?
“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

It will eventually show up. My other half's laptop took a couple weeks to acquire the icon. Just keep doing the updates and rebooting; it will show up. :)

There are a couple of programs that I rely on and Win10 GPU drivers don't cut it so ATM Win10 won't cut it for me yet.

I also don't mind paying for what works. ;-)

If that's directed at me then I'll tell you that I have both Win7 x64 Home and Pro systems here (both are crunchers as shown in my stats) plus a Win10 development setup here (but I don't crunch on it) and Win8.x just doesn't cut it in anyway shape or form for me at all as a power user (Win10 shows a lot of promise, but it just isn't up to my tasks or usage ATM). ;-)

So, why change, then?

You can ask that question of all things in life. The answer obviously depends on where you place your values and how you weight pros and cons.

I think too many people expect that each OS or software upgrade is supposed to have a bunch of bells and whistles before they upgrade, and if not... forget about it.

However, the future of software development is moving away from major version with major new features. Software development is moving toward small, incremental changes that add up to larger changes over a period of time. Take Chrome and Firefox for example. A new major version comes out every 6 months or so, each with only minor features and bug fixes. However, if you compare (e.g.) Chrome 38 against Chrome 14, you can see the major differences. Adobe Cloud and Microsoft 365 are both examples of software solutions where users are always on the latest version to reduce support costs.

Windows 10 is bringing that kind of development to the Windows platform.

I understand that many people, especially those that have been in the industry for a long time and still fear OS updates, will be resistant to such a change. They will continue to look to each major version as something to be skeptical of, and will always ask "what does it do for me?". Those kinds of questions will no longer be relevant over time.

But, if you want to stay within that mindset, I'm not here to sell Windows 10 to you. I'm not going to sell you on why you should upgrade or change. I don't mean to come off as rude, but I really don't care if you upgrade or not. If you see no value, then I'm not going to fight that uphill battle.

Personally, since I love the x86 industry, and I enjoy using Windows and have always been on the bleeding edge (bought Vista when it first came out, loved it, never had a problem with it like other people). I find value in upgrading to Windows 10 and staying on current versions of Windows. As someone who works in IT support, it helps to stay ahead of the curve at all times.

But, as is often repeated around here: to each their own.
