Bright Venus, reddish Mars, and a very thin waxing crescent Moon will appear close together in the sky, quite early this evening. Look low in the West Southwest sky, as soon as the sky begins to darken. Mars is smaller and less reflective of the Sun's light than Venus. This, added to the fact that Mars is far away from our position in space, in its orbit, make it fairly dim. Look for it slightly farther from the horizon than Venus. Mars and Venus will appear even closer together tomorrow evening, but the Moon will have moved on somewhat. |

I often miss astronomical events at this time of year, due to overcast, too. I was able to see Venus, Moon, and Mars last night, though. Mars was very dim in the trio. Used 7x50 binoculars to learn its exact position, thereafter could pick it out without optical aid. It was pretty nearly between Venus and the Moon. Venus and Mars even closer together tonight, worth trying for, if weather permits. Also--Uranus near the crescent Moon tonight. That will require binoculars, at least. Will make a new thread for that conjunction. |

Tonight the sky is clear and I can see Venus and Mars with my 7x50 Yashica binoculars. Tullio There is also a crescent Moon, but that is more common. |
