Their first departure from archiving ole up yonder never ever then recorded tunes.
I don't know the story about how this came to be.
I only know at present that George was the greatest thing that ever happened to the label.

Now... this is kinda amusing...
Beacuse, as it seems, Rod and I ALSO had history..
Ok, it's a tale.
Given.

But, he and I had a couple of drinks one night and the theory came up that there just might be men on Mars. This took fire with Rod.
He said something to the effect that, if Orson Wells could panic a nation, I certaincly can do it....
I don't have a clue how he got the creds, but a year later he had this tiny bit of a TV show called the Twilight Zone. I called him a bit later, and he actually told me he was too busy to talk and literally told me to f. off.

This was over a yaer since I gon him favore with NBC, and hw was on the verge of winning an award for the series....go figure.

Aside...not all of my BS is BS...this is kinda not.
I knew the producer, as a rim shot.,,, Bounced offa JJ. This guy actually said...well, Waddya think of this kid? I gave him a thumbs up.

He said OK..just get outta here now...you got something else???

I stammered and suddenly remembered the kit..yes, a kid, I had heard on the streetcorner the night before....I asked if we could fo in and play around abit........hs says, yeah, WRF...keys.

" You got 10 minutes of studio time on the house. now get something going, 'cus i am a busy man.............go...go....;go..............
Ten reels of 1/4 in tape later...we wus having a lotta fun.
He had no idea waht we were about to record in his absence.
We turned thos tapes into the first Runaways album with Mercury.
Ther were kinda amused, but they released it with a ribbed plastcis cover. I do have a copy. A few weeks later, it made top 40 fodder.
This was toy joy that we made in the stolen studio minutes months before.
No question about the rights has ever come to court.

I been laying that bastard for two years and you walk up with the keys..........

Well , the story is, that I did have them in my hand. She followed my up the block and was shitstruck when I unlockes the door and we waltzed in.

She was simply awestruck. Joon knew what audio equipment was, and she wss simply astounded.

Tne xeonds later, she bolted for the door,.............you stand right ther with those keys, baby, I got someting to show ya,



So, I stands there with keys in hand................
Half an hour later, jj, cheiri,and Sandy West walks in...
Like, yeah, you are the keymaster, you know how to run this stuff?
I did not have a clue, but said...sure, gurlz...mikes are in the walk.

Two hours later, their first album was born.
I did figure out how the board worked. And there was a box of 1/4 track magic laying on the table...I have now a clue what we might have recorded over. LOL.

Couple of hours later, guess who shows up. And he was absolutely FURIOus.
Nasty, mean and drunk as hell. We of course were all contrite, and just said we were playing around. He says, yeah, I see you got a full reel of playing around, kids....
That was the first albun on tape.

If you listen to it much, it is a bit rough. I mixed it. JJ kept running in and asking if the tape was still running. It is a horribly recorded record, but somehow we ran out of the studio with the tape.

That was the Runaways demo. Nicely done...LOL.
It became their first album on Mercury Records a few weeks later.
No, I don't have the masters anymore. I belive the Mercury exexs actually said.......you kids are not going to get these back once we do an album....our property now.

Not more than a few months later, the Runaways were booked in JAPAN!!

I was told simply, kid, you don't play, you gotta stay.

Now you know why I hate Fowley so much.
He was such a user,,, and ya know what, he was broke a few years later.
That, believe it or not, was JJs first break in the msuic biz.
