Roberto Battiston, head of Italian Space Agency, posted this on his blog at Le Scienze Magazine (Italian edition of Scientific American: Amalia Finzi, the “mother†of the driller of Philae calls me from Darmstadt. Excited and moved she tells me that the cometary drill of Italian brand has just completed the sequence foreseen for the survey of the comet 67P / Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The head of the driller, after coming out from the structure of Philae on a support arm has lowered the long drilling head by 470 mm and it has then taken it back. Hopefully after having drilled the ground and having uploaded cometary material to the distribution system serving the various sensors, including a small oven to heat and evaporate some of them for a better analysis. Hopefully, because the data come slowly, drop by drop. They still can not understand the outcome of operations carried out by the italian driller. However we will soon understand if the driller has reached the ground. |

Did someone have a tought about changing rotation of the asteroid by gravity influence of the Rosseta main probe? :/ ![]() ![]() non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

I believe the Rosetta mass is too small compared to that of the comet. I don't remember the figures but the mass ratio comet nucleus/Rosetta is very high. Tullio |

The lander is just a small portion of the overall Rosetta craft. Even though the anchors didn't deploy properly the lander did settle on the comet, unfortunately in a location that doesn't get much direct sunlight. They have still retrieved a lot of data that will be useful. Here is the link I read. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/11238049/Rosetta-mission-new-images-show-Philae-bouncing-across-comet.html Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. Nobody has said yet why it bounced .... I'm sure there is an anomaly team working on that. ![]() |

Small gravity over large time, gives large results... ;) ![]() ![]() non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

They say organic molecules were found on the comet. Details are missing, but maybe Hoyle and Narlikar were not far from truth when they said that life came from the comets. tullio |

They say organic molecules were found on the comet. I hope that it is more than just Methane. Maybe some amino acids? |

given the colour of the comet I would expect to see some very long chain hydrocarbons Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

It looks like conspiracy theorists are even onto this mission. :-( Good find, I ask if they are related to the flat earth society? I am sure they wear their AFBs. |

The truth is that they are mostly likely anarchists and this is their chosen way to try to bring down the government and accepted law and order. ROTFLMAO. ![]() |

And to top that one up, here are some news from North Korea: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/35032/north-korea-confirms-it-has-landed-a-man-on-the-sun/index.html LoL :D best part, quote: Hung traveled in the cover of darkness, as it would protect him from the harsh, and extreme temperatures of the Sun. Hung will also be bringing back some sun spot samples for his uncle, which I'm sure he will show off to the world in a short amount of time LoL :D ![]() ![]() non-profit org. Back to the Rosetta Mission. The comet and Rosetta are still moving inward toward the sun but they will not cross the earth's path. That makes me wonder how active the comet will get. I found this 3D graphic that shows the comet will pass about half way between the earth and Mars. http://sci.esa.int/where_is_rosetta/ Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required.
