New Galaxy Map Relocates The Milky Way To A Ginormous Supercluster Called Laniakea Astronomers have long had a sense of where the Milky Way is in relation to other galaxies, but a new three-dimensional star map gives us a more nuanced look at our cosmic neighborhood. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/05/laniakea-supercluster-galaxy-tully_n_5763274.html Edit: Video and map. |

you're welcome, Chris. Looking at the map again, reminder of We Are Small And Insignificant. Laniakea spans some 520 million light-years across. HUGE! Maybe we are not alone. |

you're welcome, Chris. +1 Very much so. And Lanikea is just a small portion of what we know as the universe. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

very interesting Lynn . I wonder is there a big black hole in the middle of the great Attractor ? I'm a bit confused now if we are all moving farther away from each other how does the Great Attractor play into this and will we end up with harf a dozen super super super massive black holes in the universe . If so then would we not have a conventional ending to the Universe ? a big CRUNCH in stead of a slow cold death ? ![]() |

very interesting Lynn . Glenn, Within the boundaries of the Laniakea Supercluster, galaxy motions are directed inward, in the same way that water streams follow descending paths toward a valley. The Great Attractor region is a large flat bottom gravitational valley with a sphere of attraction that extends across the Laniakea Supercluster. Black Holes are everywhere. Only one is in our Milky Way.I'm not going to be around when our universe ends. I don't think anyone can guess a big crunch, or slow death. No one knows our fate, or can guess it. |

The Great Attractor region is a large flat bottom gravitational valley with a sphere of attraction that extends across the Laniakea Supercluster. So what is it then if not a black hole , something must be creating the gravitational well ? Witch has me very confused . I have herd that evidence for a Multiverse can be seen in the stars as they are all heading towards 1 side and 1 direction is this what it is a gravitational valley pulling everything towards another Universe ? ![]() |

Mass creates what we call gravity. There is no such Attractor. What there is is a warping of space by the mass in the Galaxies and objects will "roll down the hill" because everything wants to be in the lowest energy state. |

william that does not make cents mate . I'm thinking it what they have found out by looking at the background radiation . That another universe has touched ours and our universe is being swallowed up by this other verse and that is what is causing the grav well it's pulling our verse into it . as you said gravity is caused by mass so unless there is some sort of Black or white hole in the middle then i can only think of what has been found so far and that is our verse is being pulled into another 1 . Life is stranger than fiction . ![]() |

We are apparently expanding equally in all outward directions. The exception to this is when 2 galaxies are close enough to attract each other such as the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxies. If we were attracted by another universe we would be going in a single direction. The trouble is that there may be no marker or signpost to answer this question out there in the Cosmos. What evidence is there for another universe? |

True, Hubble spoke of the Universe, having no center, no central point from which we're expanding. The fact that galaxies attract each other, is the result of their mass and its influence on gravity. A multiverse is a true hypothesis imo. rOZZ Music Pictures |

I see you point Glenn, and have to agree, could be a black hole, or dark matter. I listened to the video again, and something so vast in light years just blows my mind. Your other point about another universe, mine, another dimension. Annie, your welcome :) |

Lynn i agree with you on that if there is another Universe then it will probably be in another dimension from ours Could also explain why there is less mass in our universe than we thought there was , maybe it's been sucked into the great attractor aka the other Universe or dimension The weirder the idea the more lickely is may be true ! ![]() |

I am still convinced that what we know about the universe is only a drop in a bucket compared to oceans of what we don't know and can't see. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

I am still convinced that what we know about the universe is only a drop in a bucket compared to oceans of what we don't know and can't see. I think Newton had the same opinion. Tullio |
