By Rick Martin and Carma Hassan, CNN updated 7:03 AM EDT, Sun August 24, 2014 Napa County Fire Capt. Jim Christenson said his units were driving around looking for damage. "So far at the fire house we lost a fish tank and some glassware," he said. A dispatcher for the Napa County Sheriff's Office said there was some water damage. She declined to provide additional details, saying she's not authorized to talk to the media. CNN's Augie Martin, who lives in San Francisco described the earthquake as "the softest, most rolling 6.0 earthquake I've ever felt. It was obvious -- no doubt. But living in the city proper, it was more of a roller than a sharp jolt." |

A 6.0 is a good shaker but the building codes that most structures were constructed with will result in little or no damage. It is enough of a quake that you don't want to be walking around when it hits because you will fall. They still might report damage to older building that haven't had the earthquake retrofits. As for the road system, California has spent over 15 years and a good deal of money upgrading the road system to handle a shaker like this. Many of the older overpasses used support columns without enough steel in them, They could be recognized by their square shape. The new ones are round and have a massive steel rebar structure under the concrete. What scares me a bit is we had as a customer the San Francisco utilities. The are located in a multistory building that was constructed just after the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the building is steel and brick. They weren't sure if the building would withstand a really big earthquake but replacing or upgrading it would be a costly undertaking. |

Strongest aftershock was a 3.6, latest is a 1.4. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

0320 PDT - I slept through this one. I was at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo during the 1989 Loma Prieta quake. Real bucking bronco ride. American Canyon is about 1 mile north of there, and Napa is about a 10-15 minute drive north/northwest. Lovely area. Damage and injury reports not real bad so far. Hope not too much damage to the wineries and brewries around there. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Napa wine and ACE trains canceled for inspections to the tracks. Quake upgraded by USGS from 6.0 to 6.1. Various roads in the area buckled, one by about 10". The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

It woke me up at 3:20 AM - PDT. I immediately turned on channel 5; and, they had text scrolling at the bottom of the screen stating it was a 5.7. Guess they were wrong. I hate middle of the night quakes. They always wake me up, and then it takes me over an hour to get back to sleep. :-( TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Now it's 4 mobile homes destroyed, in more than 1 park. Water lines fractured near mobile homes resulting in low water pressure, fires were natural gas fed. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
