If this thing becomes big enough it could solve the man caused part of global warming. Whats that society that belives only 500,000 humans should be allowed to live on the planet? And no I think your not being cynical. just realistic.
Old James |

If this thing becomes big enough it could solve the man caused part of global warming. Well, if the politicians don't pull their fingers out, Ebola is going to be the biggest threat ever. |

If this thing becomes big enough it could solve the man caused part of global warming. James, Are you sure it wasn't 500 million people, instead of 500 thousand? If it was 500 million, Gary linked it in the Climate Change solutions 2 thread not long ago... His post: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=74847&postid=1570030 The Link: http://www.thegeorgiaguidestones.com/Message.htm The problem with them is they are wrong.. The carrying capacity for the Earth of humans living in 'perpetual balance with nature' is about 3 million, NOT 500 million (3 million being the approximate global population of humans just prior to the development of agriculture 12 to 15 thousand years ago). This is the ONE SURE way to solve 'AGW', but I think I can speak for almost ALL of us when I say that it is surely not the desired way. |

If this thing becomes big enough it could solve the man caused part of global warming. I have said all along that if we don't implement a solution to the real problem facing this planet (overpopulation) that mother nature would. Even if 80% of the world's human population were to secumb to this or another plague over 1.4 billion people would be survivors. I have seen other people here post that the planet can easily support a population of 10 billion but I strongly disagree. Ebola Death Toll In West Africa Passes 3,000: WHO DAKAR, Sept 26 (Reuters) - The death toll from an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has risen to at least 3,091 out of 6,574 probable, suspected and confirmed cases, the World Health Organization said on Friday. Liberia has recorded 1,830 deaths, around three times as many as in either Guinea or Sierra Leone, the two other most affected countries, according to WHO data recrleived up to Sept. 23. An outbreak that began in a remote corner of Guinea has taken hold of much of neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, prompting warnings that tens of thousands of people may die from the worst outbreak of the disease on record. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/26/ebola-death-toll-west-africa_n_5890060.html Terrible News :( |

American aid worker exposed to Ebola at NIH An American physician exposed to Ebola while caring for patients in West Africa has arrived at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. The Associated Press reported Sunday that the NIH confirmed the doctor’s arrival. http://www.politico.com/story/2014/09/nih-to-treat-american-aid-worker-with-ebola-111374.html Tragic that Doctors, get the help in America. America can't help people in Africa. Ebola clinics fill up as death toll hits 3,000 Doctors are in short supply and countries are scrambling to find more resources for the Ebola outbreak, as the death toll from the virus hit 3,000. According to a Wall Street Journal report Sunday, the World Health Organization said 3,091 people have died of confirmed, suspected or probable cases of Ebola. Even as countries try to marshal more resources, those needs threaten to become much greater, and possibly even insurmountable. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/09/28/ebola-clinics-fill-up-as-death-toll-hits-3000/?intcmp=latestnews |

As for some ignorant people killing aid workers, Why would anyone want to go there not under a military escort? I find it more than a coincedance that ISIS has taken over the headlines from Ebola. Why is that? Why not let the jackasses in Syria and Iraq kill off there own people? So we can contain Ebola so it cant spread and kill off the rest of us. I know why OIL.
Old James |

Isn't the middle east supposed to be out of oil by now? I read twenty years ago that there was only about ten years worth of oil left in that region. Ebola Update: UN's Ebola virus HQ in Ghana opens The UN mission to combat Ebola opened its headquarters on Monday in Ghana, where it will coordinate aid for the accelerating West African crisis. The spread of Ebola has spiralled into the worst ever outbreak, and the World Health Organization says it is has linked more than 3,000 deaths to the disease, although that is likely an underestimate of the true toll. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/un-s-ebola-virus-hq-in-ghana-opens-1.2781142 Some good news about Ebola: It won’t spread nearly as fast as other epidemics As a mathematical epidemiologist, I can tell you there is some good news in the Ebola epidemic ravaging West Africa. This Ebola is not spreading nearly as fast as some scourges of the past. http://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2014/09/29/some-good-news-about-ebola-it-wont-spread-nearly-as-fast-as-other-epidemics/ |

That report is a bit misleading. Was it contracted in Liberia or the US? |

That report is a bit misleading. Was it contracted in Liberia or the US? Of course it is ambiguous. The reporter couldn't figure out a way to ask the virus when and where it entered the human it now infests. The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms is 2 to 21 days. |

Updated: (CNN) -- A patient being treated at a Dallas hospital is the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday. The person, whose identity was not released, left Liberia on September 19 and arrived in the United States on September 20, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. At that time, the person did not have symptoms. "But four or five days later," that person began to show symptoms, Frieden said. The person was hospitalized and isolated Sunday at a hospital in Texas. Frieden sought to play down the risk to public health. "It's a severe disease, which has a high case fatality rate, even with the best of care, but there are core, tried and true public health interventions that stop it," he said of Ebola. "The bottom line here is that I have no doubt that we will control this importation or this case of Ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country," Frieden said. A number of other Americans have been diagnosed with the disease in West Africa and then brought to the United States for treatment. The person who first tested positive for Ebola in the United States is a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/30/health/ebola-us/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 |

Ebola confirmed in Texas patient; First case diagnosed in U.S. Last Updated Sep 30, 2014 6:28 PM EDT The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the first case of Ebola virus diagnosed in United States. The patient, still not identified, had recently flown here from Liberia to visit family, officials said. He was admitted on Monday to an isolation unit at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas to be tested for Ebola after he began exhibiting symptoms. "This is the first case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S., and the first case of this strain of Ebola diagnosed outside Africa," CDC Director Tom Frieden said at a news conference Tuesday evening. Frieden sought to reassure the public, stating "I have no doubt that we will control this importation, this case of Ebola, so it will not spread widely in this country." Frieden said the patient left Liberia on Sept. 19 and arrived in the United States the next day to visit family. He was not experiencing symptoms at the time, and therefore would not have been contagious to any other travelers. "There is zero risk of transmission on the flight," Frieden said. "Ebola doesn't spread before someone gets sick, and he didn't get sick until four days after he got off the airplane. So we don't believe there was any risk to anyone on the flight." He declined to release any details about the man's itinerary or flight numbers. Ebola cannot be transmitted through the air, but only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of people who are infected and exhibiting symptoms. Frieden said the patient started to develop symptoms on Sept. 24, initially sought treatment on Sept. 26, and was admitted to the hospital in Dallas on Sept. 28, where he was placed in isolation. He was tested for Ebola on Monday and the results came back positive today. "We will contact anyone we think has any likelihood of having had contact with the patient when he was infectious," Frieden said, presumably starting with the relatives the patient was visiting. He said the process of tracing those contacts was still in the early stages. The virus has killed more than 3,000 people across West Africa and infected a handful of American health care workers who were working in the region. In August, American missionary Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantley contracted Ebola at the treatment center where they were working in Liberia. Both were flown to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta in strict medical isolation and both recovered. A third patient, Dr. Rick Sacra, was also evacuated from West Africa and treated at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he recovered earlier this month. The CDC has said 12 other people in the U.S. have been tested for Ebola since late July, including a man at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, but all of those tests came back negative. This is a developing story and will be updated. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ebola-confirmed-in-texas-patient-first-case-diagnosed-in-u-s/ |

"The patient is believed to have had a handful of contacts with people after showing symptoms of the virus, and before being hospitalized, Frieden said. A CDC team is en route to Texas to investigate those contacts." Thanks Lynn, for a moment, I thought James could be right, a runaway train with no one at the controls. Those contacts & 3 days... |

Arrived 20/9 symptoms started showing by 25/9, hospitalised on 28/9... Well, from what I just saw on CNN, yes, he arrived from Liberia on Sept. 20th. He got sick on Sept. 24th. He sought medical help at the hospital on the 24th, and again on the 26th. On the 28th, he was finally admitted into the isolation ward. Other people exposed? Well other than his friends and family he was visiting, there is also all the health care workers that dealt with him from the 24th to the 28th before they thought he might have Ebola. Good luck tracing out ALL of his contacts. What a fuster cluck. Pucker Factor 9.5. IMO, time to seal the international borders of the USA, nobody leaves without quarantine. Restrict travel inside the USA. And wait for about 6 weeks (the max 3 week incubation period of the Virus, plus the additional 3 weeks that males can be contagious after recovery). No new cases in that time, we likely would have dodged the bullet... this time. |
