The first American doctor that arrived had a transfusion? Late Edit: I'm not going crazy, for now :) American doctor Kent Brantly, who was infected with Ebola in July, received a vial of blood from an Ebola survivor before being evacuated to an Atlanta hospital. Brantly also got the experimental drug ZMapp and it's unknown whether either helped him recover. http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/ebola-ravages-health-care-sierra-leone-capital-25263512 |

U.S. doctor will be treated without experimental drug With all supplies of an experimental drug exhausted, doctors and nurses caring for the third Ebola patient to return to the USA will rely on conventional methods of treating symptoms and preventing complications. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/09/05/us-doctor-infected-with-ebola-arrives-in-nebraska/15119223/ |

Sierra Leone's planned Ebola lockdown could 'spread disease further' A four-day nationwide lockdown announced by the Sierra Leone government in a bid to contain the biggest ever outbreak of Ebola could instead exacerbate the spread of the disease, aid agencies have warned. From 18 to 21 September people across the west African nation will not be allowed to leave their homes, a senior official in the president's office said on Friday. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/06/sierra-leone-lockdown-ebola-outbreak The outbreak won't go away :( |

What?? Rare outbreak in Tokyo as WHO warns of spread of dengue fever (CNN) -- As the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the potential increase of dengue fever and other climate-sensitive illnesses, Japan saw an almost-seven decade streak of being dengue fever-free end. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/04/world/asia/dengue-fever-tokyo/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 |

What?? Thanks for all the updates Lynn :) <- smile is for you btw :) - content of the thread is definitely more :( though. I've had dengue fever :( horrible... also referred to as bone crusher's disease in some places (on account of it feeling like your bones are being sat on by a portly and somewhat sadistic elephant). It really is widespread and likely to become more so unfortunately. I think it's one of those diseases that have been neglected - like ebola. Unlike ebola however, most people recover fine - although as soon as they have immunity to one strain of the virus, they are at high risk of getting very ill indeed if they fall ill with another strain of it. |

yes Lynn Dengue fever is becoming a problem here in Australia as it spreads father down south more Australians will be exposed to it and we have known about it for a few years now so to Australians it is not new news It's spread buy Mosquitoes . Here we are releasing millions of Mozzy's that are sterile or have sterile offspring as well as spraying to kill them |

I don't think it will to many more decades when blood transfusions may be the only way to cure someone when Antibodies stop working totally |

When antibodies stop working we are all dead. A transfusion wont help.
Old James |

I'm shocked to hear you had the fever Annie. Glad you recovered. I've heard of the disease, just not in detail as described by you, Annie. Horrible to even think one strain and another. :( Glenn Wrote: yes Lynn Dengue fever is becoming a problem here in Australia as it spreads father down south more Australians will be exposed to it and we have known about it for a few years now so to Australians it is not new news It's spread buy Mosquitoes . I feel sorry for all Australians, and hope health officials spray those mosquitoes to hell. Kids are getting really sick in Colorado, with an unknown virus :( Going to get flu shot, Pneumonia, malaria, etc.. scary things will come. |

yes Lynn Glenn, dengue fever has been known here in Australia since the first European settlements started in our warmer regions (northern New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory) from the later half of the 19th century. Some speculate that it has always been here while some think that it was introduced by travelers from the north (either by the 1st Aboriginals, Asian fishermen, or European traders) but as our records are so limited by our short recorded history either side could be right. Keeping water tanks well screened and by not leaving standing open water around your property (i.e. water in still ponds or in pot plant trays, etc,..) are a big help as this discourages the mozzies from breeding. Cheers. |

Kids are getting really sick in Colorado, with an unknown virus :( I saw that :( Do hope they find out what the cause is, Lynn and that the little ones recover quickly. Re: what Glenn and Wiggo have been saying... as far as I know dengue isn't species reliant like say malaria is (or used to be - don't know if that's changed :( let's hope not!) With dengue, any mosquito can get infected from biting an infected human. It doesn't get sick - but it stays infected for the rest of its life and so transmits the disease onwards. I actually caught it from a tick bite - my own fault I'm sure... I did love making friends with wild animals :) still do really :) But the tip about not leaving standing water around and/or uncovered is a good one. It doesn't take a lot of the wet stuff to get a ton of the buzzy ones :/ |

Kids are getting really sick in Colorado, with an unknown virus :( Virus is Multi-State now, seems to target kids with asthma. I hope they all get better and find out about the virus. Nothing really new today one Ebola. Just on article, on a vaccine. Vaccine gives monkeys Ebola immunity Vaccinated monkeys have developed "long-term" immunity to the Ebola virus, raising a prospect of successful human trials, say scientists. The experiments by the US National Institutes of Health showed immunity could last at least 10 months. Human trials of the vaccine started this week in the US and will extend to the UK and Africa. http://www.bbc.com/news/health-29076371 |

I have to wonder if the sudden increase of rear diseases spreading to places that have not had them as they are normally only found in warm climates weather we are now seeing 1 of the effects of Global warming . I'm curios about Ebola , does anybody know if the spreading of this has anything to do with mosquitoes or if anybody is even looking into weather they are causing it to spread ? |

Now that is a great question. I wonder if that has even been considered?
Old James |

National Security?? Obama: U.S. military to provide equipment, resources to battle Ebola epidemic in Africa President Obama said Sunday that the U.S. military will begin aiding what has been a chaotic and ineffective response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, arguing that it represents a serious national security concern. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/obama-us-military-to-provide-equipment-resources-to-battle-ebola-epidemic-in-africa/2014/09/07/e0d8dc26-369a-11e4-9c9f-ebb47272e40e_story.html |
