This is from last week, but no one has posted about NASA's work to move at "faster than light" speed.

You might be thinking to yourself right now “Faster-than-light travel? But Einstein!” Yes, according to Einstein’s theory of relativity, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. But scientists are looking for ways to get around this, and a team based at NASA Eagleworks, led by Dr Harold “Sonny” White, have been working on just that. They discovered a loophole that could theoretically allow faster-than-light travel without breaking the laws of physics. How? Warp drive, of course!

If a spaceship could be designed in such a way that it created a warp bubble, then the space in front of the ship would be compressed and the space behind would expand. This would result in space-time moving around the object, repositioning the ship without it actually moving.

I is possible to show that faster-than-light travel appears to be equivalent to time travel.

I for one am in no position to say that time travel is definitely impossible, but causality is a big problem. Killing your own grandfather type thing.

In my mind whenever I hear "FTL" I also hear "time travel". So I'm a skeptic.

If that were ever able to work I suspect it would take almost an infinite about of power.

Dr. White's current experiments use a high voltage electrical charge as a proxy for exotic matter. He believes that it may be possible to create a space warp in this way. The advantage to this method, of course, is that we can readily generate and control electrical charges, while exotic matter is currently unavailable.
The results so far hint at the possibility that a small space warp may already have been created. To confirm this, Dr. White seeks to reduce the noise factor in the laser interferometer, which is used to detect a possible space warp, and to change the the electrical field from a static state to an oscillating one. This, it is believed, will increase the efficiency of the supposed process of warp field creation, and, so, make it easier to detect.

Good to dream and aim high. Maybe some day but no time soon, ie. not in my lifetime.

I was under the impression that the speed of light is not constant.
Gravity will affect the speed as light is made of photons which is affected by gravity.

What really amazes me is the TV show "Star Trek" and just how real the technology is.

Now we are seeing the possibility of time travel, warp engines, ion power, transporter beams

What really really amazes me into dumbfoundment is how JJ Abrahams can take the Star Trek story and then pass off the vats/silos of a brewery as though it was somehow an ultra-high-tech starship engine room.

Is the USA audience so uneducated that they do not know the insides of a brewery when they see one?... It wasn't as if there were any special effects to hide anything!!!



Painfully pathetic and a very sad reflection upon anyone watching.

there is a way around the Grandfather Paradox

you don't travel through time but into another universe so time travel laws are not broken you may go back or forward but your not in your original vers so the Grandfather Paradox does not happen you kill some other you father in a different vers

and then there is the Einstein Rosen bridge (worm hole) that could let you travel FTL without time travel

I don't need FTL travel, only a cheap way to travel at 99.999 % light speed. Time dilation will do the rest.

Who cares if the engine room is a brewery or they used shots from the US Laser Fusion reactor I reackon it looked great and love the remake of the crew they got the cast correct can't wait till the next 1

I like the new Scotty madder than the old 1
Bones is fantastic even more grumpy than the old 1
love the guy whom is spook
Chekhov is great a bit young but love the accent
Kirk is great too
Ohura is hot
and the inside , the bridge is fantastic I even like the Throttle control hahaha
a great bit of humour there a star ship with a Throttle control like a boat

These flicks are obviously made to a minimum budget .....

And obviously targeted to a dumbed down minimum intelligence audience to maximize the receptiveness to adverse advertising...


Shame really in that the original series was a little Bible-thumping sometimes but it did try to be as intelligent and as thoughtful as was possible.

I believe the series very nearly didn't get off the ground because the pilot episode was too far out for the sample audience!

Perhaps I should have said that these LATER films are made to tight budgets.

The original Star trek, with William Shatner and the original cast is easily the best. As for the spin offs, The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart, was ok, as was Voyager with Kate Mulgrew but the plot was too convoluted at the end. Deep Space 9 you either liked or hated. As for prequels Star Trek Enterprise with Scot Bakula just never cuts it for me, and I won't be watching the new one either.

It's the same old story over again just like the 007 films. The originals are always the best, then money takes over and the whole idea gets diluted in the name of profits.

Hi Chris - I never got into the Next generation of star trek - how could I without Spock?! Very firm Red Dwarf fan though :)

I think this thread is starting to drift, but I loved both the 1st and 2nd Gen Star Treks. The Borg was a great sinister foe, and I really liked Q, too.
